Chapter 8 - Harbor

Harbor Family Services looked respectable.
White website.
Smiling families.
Words like support and healing.
Rachel hated every line.
Its use in this plan was not.
Vanessa had submitted an intake packet describing Lily as aggressive, food-obsessed, dishonest, and at risk of running away.
Daniel read the phrase twice.
“She is eight.”
The packet included his forged electronic signature.
It also included a recommendation from a child therapist Daniel had never met.
“He came here.”
“When?”
“Last month. Vanessa said he was an insurance consultant.”
“Did he meet Lily?”
“For maybe ten minutes.”
Lily had been drawing at the table.
Mercer asked strange questions.
Do you get angry when Daddy travels?
Do you ever take food without asking?
Do you think people are against you?
Maria thought it was inappropriate.
Vanessa told her to leave the room.
Rachel contacted Mercer’s office.
He refused to discuss anything without counsel.
Then the police officer assigned to the case called.
Vanessa had checked into a hotel in Manhattan.
The passport and travel documents were recovered from Daniel’s house, so no immediate kidnapping had occurred.
Daniel hated words like not yet.
Lily ate breakfast with him the next morning.
“Am I eating too much?”
“No.”
“Vanessa said girls get ugly when they eat too much.”
“Listen to me.”
“You eat when you’re hungry. We listen to your doctor. Not comments about your body. Not Vanessa. Not me guessing.”
“Really?”
“Yes.”
Then Lily asked:
“Can I have toast too?”
“Yes.”
That afternoon Rachel got a court filing alert.
She petitioned for an emergency protective order.
The filing claimed Lily had disclosed fear of her father.
It attached the planted letter.
“They know those are fake.”
“We do.”
“The judge doesn’t yet.”
“Then we go make sure the judge learns fast.”
Daniel looked toward the kitchen.
Lily was eating toast.

For the first time in weeks.
And across town, Vanessa was trying to make that ordinary breakfast look like evidence of danger.
