Chapter 9 - The Hearing
The emergency hearing happened Monday afternoon.
Vanessa arrived in cream.
Soft colors.
Minimal makeup.
No magenta satin.
Daniel understood the strategy immediately.
Rachel told him:
“Do not react to theater.”
Vanessa’s attorney described Daniel as wealthy, absent, intimidating, and emotionally unavailable.
He let Vanessa take over routines he should have understood himself.
Truth mixed with lies was harder to fight.
Then the attorney produced Lily’s letter.
“Forgery.”
“That is a serious allegation.”
“We have the teacher who supposedly witnessed the behavior reports ready to testify that she wrote none of them.”
Vanessa’s face remained calm.
Then Rachel introduced security footage.
Vanessa ordering Lily into the pantry.
The judge’s expression changed.
Vanessa whispered to her lawyer.
“The petitioner also purchased airline tickets to take Lily to Canada without parental consent.”
The judge allowed the records.
Vanessa finally looked at Daniel.
The judge denied her request.
More than that, he issued a temporary order preventing Vanessa from contacting Lily pending further investigation.
Daniel exhaled for what felt like the first time in three days.
Outside court, reporters waited.
Someone had leaked the filing.
Rachel told him to say nothing.
Vanessa did not follow that advice.
She stopped before the cameras.
“I tried to protect a child whose father refused to see how troubled she had become.”
“Keep walking.”
“The public will understand when all the evidence comes out.”
Maria saw the clip online from home.
She immediately called Rachel.
“She said all the evidence.”
“So?”
“She has more.”
Vanessa would not build one folder.
Rachel asked Maria:
“What are we missing?”
Maria looked around the kitchen.
“The nanny cam.”
“What nanny cam?”
Maria had bought one herself two months earlier after she first became worried.
A tiny camera above the kitchen door.
Not connected to the house system.
It had been recording to a memory card.
May you like
Maria went to retrieve it.
The camera was gone.
