Chapter 9 - THE SECRET BEHIND ADRIAN COLEThe screen went black.

But nobody moved.
The final sentence remained in my mind.
âADRIAN WAS NEVER THE ONLY ONE WATCHING CLAIRE.â
Those words felt heavier than anything else I had heard that night.
Because until that moment, I believed I understood the nightmare.
I believed the story was simple.
My husband had been sent to spy on me.
His family had hidden the truth about my mother.
They had manipulated my life for years.
But now there was another question.
Who had been watching Adrian?
And why?
The officer slowly stepped away from the computer.
âMr. Cole.â
Adrian didnât respond.
His eyes were still fixed on the black screen.
âWho was watching you?â
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he whispered:
âI donât know.â
I turned toward him.
The anger inside me returned instantly.
âYou donât know?â
My voice echoed through the basement.
âYou spent years hiding things from me, and now suddenly you donât know?â
Adrian looked at me.
âIâm telling the truth.â
I shook my head.
âThatâs the problem, Adrian.â
I pointed toward the screen.
âI donât know when youâre telling the truth anymore.â
He lowered his eyes.
And that hurt.
Because the old Adrian would have fought.
He would have explained.
He would have reached for my hand.
This Adrian just stood there.
Like a man who knew he had lost the right to defend himself.
The officer walked toward the computer.
âWe need to recover more files.â
He clicked through the folders.
There were hundreds.
Maybe thousands.
Names.
Dates.
Private information.
The Cole family had created an entire system of surveillance.
They didnât trust anyone.
Not employees.
Not partners.
Not even family.
The officer opened another folder.
The title appeared.
ADRIAN COLE â DEVELOPMENT RECORDS
I frowned.
âDevelopment records?â
Adrian looked at the screen.
His face changed.
âDonât open that.â
The officer looked at him.
âWhy?â
Adrian didnât answer.
The officer clicked.
The first document appeared.
A medical report.
A childâs medical report.
Adrianâs name was at the top.
My stomach tightened.
âWhat is that?â
Adrian looked away.
âSomething my father buried.â
I stared at him.
âWhat does that mean?â
He didnât respond.
The officer read through the document.
Then his expression changed.
âMr. Cole.â
Adrian looked at him.
âYou were evaluated when you were fourteen?â
âYes.â
âFor what?â
A long silence.
Then Adrian said:
âTrauma.â
Nobody spoke.
The officer continued reading.
âYour father placed you under psychological observation?â
Adrian nodded.
âWhy?â
His jaw tightened.
âBecause I saw something I wasnât supposed to see.â
I felt a chill.
âWhat?â
Adrian looked at me.
âMy father hurting someone.â
The basement became silent.
âWho?â
He hesitated.
Then:
âMy mother.â
Everyone looked toward Eleanor.
But Adrian shook his head.
âNot Eleanor.â
He looked at the floor.
âMy biological mother.â
The words surprised me.
Because I had never heard him talk about her.
Not once.
âWhat happened to her?â I asked.
Adrianâs face became distant.
âShe disappeared when I was fifteen.â
âDisappeared?â
âYes.â
âDid your father know?â
Adrian laughed bitterly.
âHe was the reason.â
The officer stepped closer.
âExplain.â
Adrian took a deep breath.
âMy father controlled everything.â
âMoney.â
âPeople.â
âInformation.â
âWhen my mother tried to leave, he made sure nobody helped her.â
I looked at Charles.
The powerful man who had spent the entire night pretending he was above consequences.
For the first time...
He looked old.
Tired.
Afraid.
Adrian continued.
âMy mother knew what he was doing.â
âShe knew about the companies.â
âThe threats.â
âThe people who disappeared.â
My hands tightened.
âAnd my mother?â
Adrian looked at me.
âShe knew too.â
My heart sank.
âShe helped her?â
âYes.â
A painful silence followed.
âYour mother helped Elizabeth?â
Adrian nodded.
âThey were trying to expose him together.â
The pieces started connecting.
My mother.
Adrianâs mother.
Two women who tried to stop Charles Cole.
Two women who paid the price.
Then why?
Why did Adrian become part of the family machine?
Why did he follow his father?
I asked the question.
And his answer hurt more than I expected.
âBecause I was scared.â
The honesty surprised me.
Adrian looked at me.
âI was young.â
âI had nowhere to go.â
âMy father convinced me that if I turned against him, people would die.â
He swallowed.
âAnd he was right.â
I stared at him.
âWhat people?â
Adrian didnât answer.
The officer did.
âMr. Cole.â
Adrian looked away.
Then quietly said:
âClaire.â
My heart stopped.
âMe?â
He nodded.
âHe threatened you before I even met you.â
The room became silent.
The officer looked confused.
âWhy?â
Adrian looked at the files.
âBecause my father knew Elizabeth hid something.â
âAnd he believed Claire would eventually find it.â
I felt cold.
âSo this was all because of my motherâs files?â
âYes.â
âNo.â
I shook my head.
âThat doesnât make sense.â
I looked at him.
âIf that was all he wanted...â
I paused.
âWhy attack me tonight?â
Nobody answered.
Because that question mattered.
The entire dinner.
The plate.
The humiliation.
The attempt to control me.
It wasnât just about my condo.
It wasnât just about money.
Something had changed tonight.
Something had scared them.
The officer looked at the timeline.
âWait.â
Everyone turned.
He pointed at the screen.
âThe hidden camera recorded more than the dinner.â
He opened another file.
A video from earlier that evening.
Before I arrived.
My stomach tightened.
The screen showed the dining room.
Empty.
Then Charles entered.
Eleanor followed.
Adrian was already there.
They were talking.
The officer increased the volume.
Charlesâs voice filled the basement.
âShe knows.â
I froze.
Eleanor looked at him.
âHow?â
Charles answered:
âThe documents.â
My heart started racing.
âWhat documents?â
The video continued.
Adrian looked nervous.
âWhat are you going to do?â
Charles stared at him.
âFix it.â
The screen showed Eleanor.
âTonight?â
âYes.â
A pause.
âBefore she leaves this house.â
My blood ran cold.
The officer stopped the video.
âWhat happened next?â
He continued playing.
The conversation became clearer.
Charles looked directly at Adrian.
âYou were supposed to handle her.â
Adrianâs face changed.
âI never agreed to that.â
Charles stepped closer.
âYou owe this family everything.â
Adrian shook his head.
âNo.â
His voice became angry.
âI owe you nothing.â
Everyone froze.
Because this was the first time we had seen Adrian challenge his father.
Charles leaned closer.
âRemember what happens when you betray me.â
The video stopped.
But we didnât need to hear more.
Something had happened before dinner.
Something that pushed Adrian to finally turn against his family.
I looked at him.
âWhat did he threaten you with?â
Adrian stayed silent.
âAdrian.â
He looked at me.
And for the first time...
I saw pure fear in his eyes.
Not guilt.
Not regret.
Fear.
âHe has proof.â
âProof of what?â
Adrian swallowed.
âSomething I did.â
My heart sank.
âWhat did you do?â
He didnât answer.
The officer stepped closer.
âYou need to tell us.â
Adrian closed his eyes.
Then whispered:
âThe night your mother died...â
A pause.
âI wasnât just there.â
My blood turned cold.
âWhat are you saying?â
Adrian looked at me.
And the next words destroyed the last piece of trust I had left.
âI was the person who drove the car.â
The room went silent.
I couldnât move.
Couldnât speak.
My husband.
The man I thought betrayed me because of his family.
The man who claimed he wanted to protect me.
Had been behind the wheel the night my mother died.
The officer reached for his radio.
Maya covered her mouth.
Eleanor looked away.
And Charles...
Charles smiled.
A small, satisfied smile.
Because he knew something I didnât.
Then Adrian whispered:
âBut ClaireâŠâ
His voice broke.
âI didnât kill your mother.â
I stared at him.
âThen who did?â
Adrian looked toward the dark passage behind us.
The hidden room.
The cameras.
The files.
And said:
âThe person who ordered me to drive that night...â
A pause.
â...was standing in this basement the entire time.â
Everyone turned.
Toward Charles Cole.
May you like
And Charles finally smiled.
Because he knew the truth was about to destroy all of us.
