Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN WHO STOOD BEHIND THE LIEThe image stayed frozen on the screen.

Maya.

Standing behind my parents fifteen years ago.

My brother-in-law’s wife.

The woman who had held my hand tonight.

The woman who had stood between Adrian and me when he tried to approach.

The woman who whispered that the basement needed to be searched.

The woman who acted like she was finally brave enough to tell the truth.

My stomach twisted.

Because now I had one terrifying question.

Was Maya a victim?

Or was she part of it?

Nobody spoke.

The only sound in the basement was the faint hum of the computer.

The officer looked at Maya.

“Mrs. Carter.”

Maya didn’t answer.

Her eyes were fixed on the photograph.

Not shocked.

Not confused.

Like someone who had been waiting years for this exact moment.

“Who are you?” I whispered.

Maya finally looked at me.

And the sadness in her eyes made me even more afraid.

“Claire
”

“No.”

I stepped back.

“Don’t say my name like you’re my friend.”

Her face fell.

“I am your friend.”

I laughed bitterly.

“Friends don’t appear in pictures connected to my mother’s death.”

The words hit her.

Because they were true.

The officer moved closer.

“Mrs. Carter, I need an explanation.”

Maya looked at Charles.

Then Eleanor.

Then Adrian.

Finally, she looked at me.

“I was there.”

The room became silent.

My heart sank.

“You already said that.”

“No.”

Maya shook her head.

“I mean I was there before everything happened.”

My hands went cold.

“Explain.”

She took a deep breath.

“My father worked for Charles Cole.”

Nobody moved.

Charles’s face changed slightly.

Only slightly.

But enough.

The officer noticed.

“Your father?”

Maya nodded.

“He was one of his accountants.”

She looked at the files.

“He handled the money.”

My eyes moved toward the documents.

The fake companies.

The hidden payments.

The names.

“My father knew what Charles was doing.”

She swallowed.

“But he was afraid.”

I stared at her.

“And your mother?”

“My mother knew too.”

Maya looked at me.

“She tried to help Elizabeth.”

A strange feeling moved through me.

Another family.

Another woman.

Another person who tried to stop Charles.

“And the picture?” I asked.

Maya looked at the screen.

“That was the night my father gave Elizabeth the information.”

The officer frowned.

“What information?”

Maya answered quietly.

“The original records.”

My heartbeat increased.

“The files Charles was trying to find.”

Adrian looked at the computer.

“So my father wasn’t looking for one thing.”

“No,” Maya said.

“He was looking for everything.”

I looked at the folders around us.

The hidden room.

The surveillance system.

The years of secrets.

It suddenly made sense.

My mother hadn’t discovered one crime.

She had discovered an entire empire built on fear.

The officer turned toward Maya.

“Why were you in the picture?”

Maya looked down.

“Because I followed my father.”

“Why?”

“Because I knew something was wrong.”

She paused.

“I was seventeen.”

The room went quiet.

Seventeen.

Just a teenager caught in something much bigger than herself.

“What happened that night?” I asked.

Maya closed her eyes.

“I saw Elizabeth meet your father.”

I froze.

Again.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Maya looked at me.

“Because your father had evidence too.”

My mind raced.

Everyone kept saying my father was involved.

But nobody had explained how.

“What evidence?”

Maya walked toward the desk.

She picked up one of the old folders.

“Charles wasn’t the only one hiding things.”

She opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Bank transfers.

Documents.

Then she pulled out one picture.

A man.

My father.

Standing beside Charles.

My stomach dropped.

“I don’t understand.”

Maya looked at me.

“Your father wasn’t innocent.”

The words hurt.

But not because I didn’t believe her.

Because a small part of me still wanted him to be.

“The truth is complicated.”

Maya continued.

“Your father worked with Charles before he turned against him.”

The officer frowned.

“So he was involved?”

“Yes.”

Maya looked down.

“But then he found out what Charles was really doing.”

“What changed?”

She looked at the picture.

“Elizabeth.”

My mother.

“She convinced him to help expose Charles.”

I stared at the image.

“So my father didn’t abandon us?”

Maya hesitated.

That hesitation scared me.

“What?”

She looked at me.

“He tried to come back.”

My breath stopped.

“He tried?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t he?”

Maya looked toward Charles.

And suddenly everyone understood.

Because Charles was the answer.

“He stopped him.”

The basement went silent.

The officer looked at Charles.

“Did you threaten Claire’s father?”

Charles smiled.

A cold, empty smile.

“Everyone has choices.”

Maya’s face hardened.

“No.”

Her voice shook.

“You took his choices away.”

Charles looked at her.

“You were always too emotional.”

Maya laughed softly.

“And you were always too arrogant.”

The officer stepped closer to Charles.

“Did you have Claire’s father killed?”

Charles didn’t answer.

But his silence was louder than words.

Then Adrian spoke.

“I need to know something.”

Everyone turned.

He looked at Maya.

“Why were you protecting Claire tonight?”

Maya’s face changed.

Because that question mattered.

She looked at me.

And tears filled her eyes.

“Because I failed your mother.”

The words shocked me.

“What?”

Maya stepped closer.

“I promised Elizabeth I would protect you if something happened.”

My breathing stopped.

“When?”

“The night she died.”

The basement went silent.

“You knew my mother?”

Maya nodded.

“She saved my life.”

I stared at her.

“She was the only adult who helped me understand what my father and Charles were doing.”

Maya looked at the screen.

“She knew she might not survive.”

A tear slipped down her face.

“So she asked me to do one thing.”

“What?”

Maya looked directly at me.

“Make sure Claire never trusted the wrong person.”

My heart sank.

Because suddenly I remembered.

My mother’s final warning.

The person closest to you is the one you should fear most.

I looked at Adrian.

Then Maya.

Then Charles.

Who was she warning me about?

Adrian?

Charles?

Someone else?

The officer suddenly noticed something on the computer.

“Wait.”

Everyone turned.

He pointed at the screen.

“The photograph file has metadata.”

“What does that mean?” I asked.

“It means we can see when it was uploaded.”

He clicked.

His expression changed.

“What?”

He looked at me.

“This picture wasn’t added fifteen years ago.”

A chill moved through me.

“When was it added?”

The officer stared at the screen.

“Tonight.”

Nobody spoke.

Tonight.

Someone had accessed the hidden system.

Someone had uploaded this picture while we were downstairs.

The officer checked the security logs.

Then froze.

“What?” Adrian asked.

The officer looked at him.

“The person who accessed the system
”

A pause.

“...used your security code.”

Everyone turned toward Adrian.

His face went white.

“That’s impossible.”

The officer looked at the screen again.

“No.”

He shook his head.

“It was your code.”

I stared at my husband.

After everything.

After all the lies.

After all the secrets.

There was still another question.

Why was Adrian’s code used tonight?

And then the computer displayed one final message.

A message written by the person who accessed the system.

Four words.

Four words that made Adrian step backward.

“You still owe me.”

Adrian whispered:

“No
”

I looked at him.

“Who?”

He didn’t answer.

Because he already knew.

The officer looked at the screen.

“Mr. Cole
”

“Who is this person?”

Adrian’s face lost all color.

Then he said a name.

A name nobody expected.

A name that changed the entire investigation.

“Ethan.”

I frowned.

“Who is Ethan?”

Adrian looked at me.

And whispered:

“My brother.”

The basement fell silent.

Because everyone knew one thing.

May you like

Adrian Cole only had one brother.

And everyone believed he had died fifteen years ago.
