Chapter 12 - THE BROTHER WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD“My brother.”

Adrian’s voice was barely above a whisper.

But everyone heard him.

The basement seemed to freeze around those two words.

Ethan.

A name that meant nothing to me.

But everything to Adrian.

I looked at him.

“Your brother died?”

Adrian didn’t answer immediately.

That hesitation told me more than any explanation could.

The officer noticed too.

“Mr. Cole.”

Adrian looked at him.

“You said your brother is dead.”

“Yes.”

“Then explain why someone using his name accessed your family’s security system tonight.”

Adrian stared at the screen.

His face had lost all color.

“I don’t know.”

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because I was exhausted from hearing those words.

I don’t know.

Nobody in this family ever knew anything.

But somehow everyone had secrets.

Everyone had lies.

Everyone had reasons.

I crossed my arms carefully, ignoring the pain in my head.

“Tell me about Ethan.”

Adrian looked at me.

“Claire
”

“No.”

My voice stopped him.

“I have spent years hearing pieces of my own life from strangers.”

I pointed toward the computer.

“I found out about my mother in a basement.”

“I found out about your lies in a basement.”

“I found out you were connected to her death in a basement.”

I stepped closer.

“So now I want the truth about your brother.”

Adrian looked down.

Then he finally spoke.

“Ethan was my older brother.”

The officer pulled out his notebook.

“How much older?”

“Six years.”

Adrian took a slow breath.

“He was the first person in our family who tried to stand against my father.”

I looked at Charles.

“And what happened?”

Adrian’s expression became darker.

“My father destroyed him.”

Nobody moved.

“What does that mean?” the officer asked.

Adrian looked toward the hidden room.

“It means Ethan learned the truth too early.”

“About what?”

“Everything.”

The word hung in the air.

Adrian continued.

“He discovered my father’s businesses weren’t what they appeared to be.”

“He found the money trails.”

“He found the people my father had threatened.”

“He found the evidence Elizabeth was searching for.”

My heart tightened.

“My mother worked with Ethan?”

Adrian nodded.

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t anyone tell me?”

“Because everyone who knew the truth was afraid.”

I looked at Eleanor.

She looked away.

Charles remained silent.

That silence told me enough.

“Your brother tried to expose him.”

“Yes.”

“And Charles killed him?”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“We thought he did.”

The officer looked up.

“You thought?”

Adrian nodded slowly.

“Because there was never a body.”

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What?”

Adrian looked at me.

“My father said Ethan disappeared.”

“He told everyone Ethan ran away.”

“But you never believed him.”

“No.”

“Why?”

Adrian’s eyes became filled with pain.

“Because the last time I saw my brother
”

He stopped.

His voice broke slightly.

“He was alive.”

The room became quiet.

“What happened?” I asked.

Adrian looked at the floor.

“My father took him downstairs.”

My eyes moved toward the hidden basement.

“This basement?”

Adrian nodded.

“Yes.”

My stomach tightened.

“What happened after?”

“I heard screaming.”

Nobody spoke.

“Then silence.”

Adrian swallowed.

“The next morning, my father told us Ethan was gone.”

The officer looked toward Charles.

“Did you report him missing?”

Charles finally spoke.

“No.”

Everyone turned.

His answer was too calm.

The officer stared at him.

“Why not?”

Charles adjusted his jacket.

“Because Ethan was unstable.”

Adrian immediately reacted.

“Don’t.”

Charles looked at him.

“You know it’s true.”

“No.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“You made him look unstable.”

The room became tense.

Charles smiled slightly.

“You always were emotional.”

Adrian’s hands tightened.

“And you always were a monster.”

That was the first time I saw Charles lose control.

Only for a second.

But it happened.

His face changed.

His eyes became colder.

“Be careful.”

Adrian laughed.

“I spent my whole life being careful.”

A pause.

“I watched you destroy everyone who got in your way.”

Charles said nothing.

Then Maya spoke.

“Ethan wasn’t dead.”

Everyone turned.

My eyes widened.

“What?”

Maya looked terrified.

But certain.

“I saw him.”

The officer immediately turned toward her.

“When?”

“Years ago.”

“Where?”

Maya looked at Adrian.

“He contacted me after Elizabeth died.”

Adrian froze.

“What?”

Maya nodded.

“He was alive.”

The room exploded with silence.

“You knew?” Adrian whispered.

Maya looked ashamed.

“I didn’t know what to believe.”

“You saw my brother and said nothing?”

“I was seventeen, Adrian.”

Her voice broke.

“I was scared.”

Adrian looked hurt.

Not angry.

Hurt.

“What did he tell you?”

Maya looked toward the hidden files.

“He said Charles had killed Elizabeth.”

My breathing stopped.

“He said he had proof.”

The officer stepped closer.

“Where is that proof?”

Maya shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

“Then why is he contacting you now?”

She looked at the computer.

“Because he knows Claire found the files.”

I felt a chill.

“He’s been watching me?”

Maya nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

The officer looked concerned.

“Why?”

Maya stared at me.

“Because Ethan believes you have the last piece.”

I frowned.

“The last piece of what?”

Nobody answered.

Then Adrian whispered:

“The original evidence.”

My heart sank.

“The evidence my mother hid?”

“Yes.”

“But I don’t have anything.”

Adrian looked at me.

“Are you sure?”

The question made me angry.

“Excuse me?”

He stepped back.

“I’m not accusing you.”

“It sounds like you are.”

“No.”

His voice softened.

“I’m asking because my father believed Elizabeth gave something to you before she died.”

I shook my head.

“I was a child.”

“You were eight.”

Exactly.

I was eight years old.

What could my mother have given me?

A toy?

A letter?

A memory?

Then something happened.

Something small.

Something I had forgotten.

A memory flashed through my mind.

A rainy night.

My mother crying.

Her kneeling in front of me.

Holding my hands.

Saying:

“Claire, if Mommy ever leaves, remember this.”

I froze.

Adrian noticed.

“What?”

I looked at him slowly.

“My mother did give me something.”

Everyone became still.

“What?”

I closed my eyes.

Trying to remember.

“She gave me a necklace.”

The room changed.

Maya’s face went pale.

Charles looked up sharply.

Adrian stopped breathing.

“What necklace?” he asked.

I touched my neck instinctively.

“I don’t know.”

I swallowed.

“I lost it years ago.”

Adrian shook his head.

“No.”

His voice was quiet.

“You didn’t lose it.”

I looked at him.

“How would you know?”

Because he looked terrified.

“Because I saw it before.”

My heartbeat increased.

“When?”

Adrian stared at me.

“The first night we met.”

I felt cold.

“What?”

He whispered:

“You were wearing it.”

Silence.

“But why does that matter?” I asked.

Adrian looked toward Charles.

Then the files.

Then me.

“Because that necklace wasn’t jewelry.”

A pause.

“It was a key.”

The basement went silent.

The officer stepped forward.

“A key to what?”

Adrian looked at the hidden room.

And answered:

“To the place where your mother hid the truth.”

Before anyone could speak...

The lights suddenly went out.

Again.

But this time...

Nobody screamed.

Because everyone knew what it meant.

Someone was inside the house.

Someone was moving through the darkness.

The officer turned on his flashlight.

A sound came from upstairs.

A door opening.

Then footsteps.

Slow.

Calm.

Coming closer.

Maya whispered:

“No
”

I looked at her.

“What?”

Her face had gone completely white.

“That’s impossible.”

The footsteps stopped at the basement entrance.

A shadow appeared.

Everyone froze.

Then a man stepped into the light.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

Adrian stopped breathing.

The man looked directly at him.

And said:

“Hello, little brother.”

Adrian’s face collapsed.

“Ethan
”

The man smiled sadly.

“I told you I wasn’t dead.”

Then he looked at me.

At Claire.

And said the words that changed everything:

“Your mother didn’t die trying to expose my father.”

May you like

A pause.

“She died trying to protect you from me.”
