Chapter 14 - THE WOMAN WHO BETRAYED MY MOTHERThe name stayed on the screen.

ELEANOR COLE.

Nobody spoke.

Not even Eleanor.

For the first time since I entered that house, she had no explanation ready.

No perfect excuse.

No calm smile.

No carefully chosen words.

She simply stood there.

Frozen.

I looked at her.

The woman who had sat across from me at dinner and casually discussed taking my home.

The woman who watched her son hurt me and called it a misunderstanding.

The woman who had spent years acting like she was above everyone.

My mother’s final message had just named her.

The person who betrayed her.

The person who called her family.

My voice came out barely above a whisper.

“Is it true?”

Eleanor didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“Did you betray my mother?”

Her eyes moved toward Charles.

That small movement told me everything.

She wasn’t looking for help.

She was looking for permission.

And Charles gave it without saying a word.

He looked away.

Eleanor closed her eyes.

Then she whispered:

“Yes.”

The word hit harder than I expected.

Even though I already knew.

Even though the evidence was right there.

Hearing her admit it made something inside me collapse.

My mother trusted her.

My mother invited her into her life.

My mother probably sat with her, laughed with her, believed she was safe.

And Eleanor destroyed that.

The officer immediately stepped forward.

“Mrs. Cole, I need you to explain exactly what you mean.”

Eleanor looked exhausted suddenly.

Older.

Like the mask she had worn for years had finally fallen away.

“I didn’t mean for any of this to happen.”

I laughed quietly.

The sound surprised even me.

“That’s what everyone says.”

I looked around the basement.

“Everyone in this family says they didn’t mean for it to happen.”

“Your husband didn’t mean to control people.”

“Your son didn’t mean to lie to me.”

“You didn’t mean to betray my mother.”

I stared at Eleanor.

“But somehow, everyone made the same choices.”

She looked down.

“You have every right to hate me.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

My voice hardened.

“I don’t hate you.”

A pause.

“I just finally see you.”

The officer turned back toward the screen.

“Can we recover the rest of Elizabeth’s recording?”

Ethan nodded.

“Yes.”

He clicked the file again.

The video restarted.

My mother appeared on the screen.

Her face was tired.

Her eyes were red.

But she was determined.

“Claire, if you are seeing this, then I need you to listen carefully.”

My tears returned instantly.

Her voice.

After all these years.

Still my mother.

Still protecting me.

“Do not trust people because they share your blood.”

“Family is not always the people who claim to love you.”

“Sometimes family is the person who stands beside you.”

“Sometimes family is the person who chooses you when there is nothing to gain.”

The camera shook slightly.

Like she was afraid someone would find her.

Then she continued.

“Eleanor knows what happened.”

Everyone looked at her.

“She knows what Charles did.”

“She knows what I discovered.”

Eleanor lowered her head.

My mother’s voice continued.

“But Eleanor is not the person who started this.”

The room changed.

Everyone froze.

Not the person who started this.

I looked at Eleanor.

Confused.

My mother continued.

“She was afraid.”

“She made the wrong choice.”

“But she did not create the monster.”

Charles’s face changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

My mother looked directly into the camera.

“Charles did.”

Silence.

Even Charles looked uncomfortable hearing his name from a dead woman.

My mother continued.

“But there is something Claire needs to know.”

The screen flickered.

Then she said:

“The reason Charles wanted the evidence was not because it could destroy him.”

A pause.

“It could destroy someone much more powerful.”

The officer frowned.

“Someone more powerful than Charles?”

Ethan looked serious.

“Yes.”

The recording continued.

“Charles was working for someone else.”

My heart stopped.

Someone else.

Another person.

Another layer.

My mother looked down at something on the table.

“I spent years thinking Charles was the center of everything.”

“But I was wrong.”

“He was only a piece.”

The screen shook.

Then my mother whispered:

“The person behind him knows everything.”

I felt cold.

“Who?” I whispered.

The recording continued.

“I found the connection.”

“I found the name.”

“And if anything happens to me
”

She paused.

“Claire must never let them find the archive.”

The video stopped.

Everyone stared.

The officer immediately turned toward Ethan.

“What archive?”

Ethan looked at the necklace around my neck.

“The one your mother hid.”

I touched it.

“But you said this was only a message.”

Ethan nodded.

“It was.”

“Then why does everyone keep talking about an archive?”

Ethan looked at me.

“Because the archive contains proof.”

“Proof of what?”

His expression became darker.

“Proof of who really controls Charles Cole.”

The basement fell silent.

Then Adrian spoke.

“Who?”

Ethan looked at him.

“You already know.”

Adrian shook his head.

“No.”

“Yes.”

Ethan stepped closer.

“You’ve known since you were a child.”

Adrian’s face changed.

“What are you talking about?”

Ethan looked at Charles.

“Ask your father.”

Everyone turned.

Charles remained silent.

The officer moved closer.

“Mr. Cole.”

No answer.

“Who were you working for?”

Charles smiled faintly.

“You think this ends with me?”

Nobody responded.

Because that answer was terrifying.

Not because it was a confession.

Because it was a warning.

Charles looked at me.

“Your mother always had a problem.”

My eyes narrowed.

“What?”

“She believed finding the truth meant she had won.”

He smiled.

“But truth doesn’t protect people.”

“It gets them killed.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“Enough.”

Charles looked at him.

“Still pretending you’re the hero?”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“I’m done being your weapon.”

For a moment, father and son stared at each other.

Then Charles laughed.

A quiet laugh.

“You still don’t understand.”

He looked at Adrian.

“You think you escaped me?”

A pause.

“You didn’t.”

Adrian’s face changed.

“What did you do?”

Charles smiled.

“I protected my investment.”

The officer immediately reacted.

“What investment?”

Charles looked at Adrian.

Then me.

And said:

“Ask your husband what happened after the accident.”

My heart dropped.

Again.

Adrian went pale.

“What are you talking about?”

Charles smiled.

“You never told her, did you?”

I looked at Adrian.

“What?”

He didn’t answer.

And that scared me more than anything.

“Adrian.”

He looked at me.

His eyes filled with guilt.

“What happened after the accident?”

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Ethan suddenly stepped forward.

“Don’t listen to him.”

But Adrian looked broken.

Because whatever Charles was talking about...

Adrian knew.

The officer turned toward him.

“Mr. Cole.”

Adrian whispered:

“After the accident
”

A pause.

“I didn’t leave immediately.”

My heart stopped.

“What do you mean?”

He looked at me.

“I stayed.”

The room became silent.

“How long?”

Adrian closed his eyes.

“Long enough to hear your mother say something.”

I felt a chill.

“What did she say?”

He looked toward the screen.

Toward the image of my mother.

Then whispered:

“She said the person who betrayed her was not Eleanor.”

Everyone froze.

“Then who?” I asked.

Adrian looked at me.

And said:

“She said it was someone she trusted more than anyone.”

A pause.

“Someone she considered family.”

My breathing stopped.

“Who?”

Adrian looked at Charles.

Then Eleanor.

Then Ethan.

Finally...

He looked at me.

And whispered:

“Your father.”

The basement went silent again.

But this time...

Nobody had an explanation.

Because the truth had just become even darker.

And somewhere inside that house...

The final piece of my mother’s secret was still hidden.
