Chapter 4 - THE MAN WHO WAS NEVER MY SAVIORThe video loaded slowly.

A black screen.

A few seconds of silence.

Then a timestamp appeared.

Three years earlier.

My breath stopped.

Three years earlier.

Before Adrian proposed.

Before the wedding.

Before I ever believed he was the only person in the world who truly understood me.

The screen flickered.

A room appeared.

Not this basement.

Not the dining room.

A private office.

Charles Cole was sitting behind a large wooden desk.

Across from him was Adrian.

Younger.

Calmer.

But unmistakably the same man.

My husband.

My hands started shaking.

The officer noticed.

“Are you okay?”

I didn’t answer.

Because I already knew.

I wasn’t.

The video continued.

Charles poured himself a drink.

Adrian sat quietly.

“You understand what you’re doing?” Charles asked.

Adrian looked down.

“Yes.”

That one word felt like a knife.

The officer turned up the volume.

The room became silent.

Charles leaned back.

“She’s Elizabeth Bennett’s daughter.”

Adrian nodded.

“I know.”

My stomach twisted.

They were talking about me.

Before I even knew him.

Charles continued.

“She has no idea what her mother discovered.”

Adrian looked uncomfortable.

“She’s not involved.”

Charles laughed.

“Everyone is involved when they are connected to Elizabeth.”

I felt cold.

My mother.

Again.

Everything always came back to her.

Charles continued.

“You get close to her.”

Adrian didn’t respond.

“You earn her trust.”

A pause.

“Find out where Elizabeth hid the files.”

My fingers covered my mouth.

The room started spinning.

The officer looked at Adrian.

Adrian looked away.

The video continued.

“She’s not going to tell you anything if she doesn’t trust you.”

Charles smiled.

“That’s why you are perfect for this.”

Adrian’s voice was quiet.

“What if she finds out?”

Charles leaned forward.

“Then make sure she never does.”

The video stopped.

Nobody spoke.

The silence was unbearable.

I turned toward Adrian.

Slowly.

Very slowly.

“Tell me that’s fake.”

My voice barely worked.

“Tell me that video was edited.”

Adrian opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was my answer.

A tear slipped down my face.

Not because I was weak.

Because I was finally grieving.

Not for my marriage.

Not anymore.

For the woman I had been.

The woman who believed love meant safety.

The woman who thought she had finally found someone who chose her.

I looked at Adrian.

“You were assigned to me.”

He swallowed.

“Yes.”

The word destroyed whatever hope I had left.

“How long?”

He looked down.

“Six months.”

“Six months?”

I laughed softly.

“You spent six months pretending to love me?”

“No.”

His answer came quickly.

“I mean... yes, that’s how it started.”

I stared at him.

“How comforting.”

He stepped closer.

“Claire, listen to me.”

“No.”

My voice became sharper.

“You listen.”

Everyone stopped.

“I want to understand something.”

I pointed at the screen.

“You met me because your father told you to.”

Adrian nodded.

“You dated me because you needed information.”

He looked away.

“Yes.”

“You married me because you still hadn’t found what you wanted.”

His silence confirmed it.

I felt sick.

“Then when did I become a person to you?”

That question finally broke him.

His face changed.

Pain appeared.

Real pain.

“Claire...”

“When?”

I needed the answer.

Even though I knew it would hurt.

“When did I stop being a mission?”

Adrian looked at me.

And whispered:

“The first day I met you.”

I almost smiled.

Almost.

But I couldn’t.

“Don’t lie to me now.”

“I’m not.”

His eyes filled with regret.

“I went there because of my father.”

A pause.

“But I stayed because of you.”

I shook my head.

“That doesn’t erase what you did.”

“I know.”

“Does it erase the lies?”

“No.”

“Does it erase the fact that you watched me love you while you were hiding the truth?”

His face tightened.

“No.”

“Then what exactly are you asking me to forgive?”

He had no answer.

Because there wasn’t one.

The officer stepped between us slightly.

“Mr. Cole, I need to ask you something.”

Adrian looked at him.

“Did your father order you to marry Claire?”

The question hung in the air.

Everyone waited.

Adrian closed his eyes.

Then answered.

“No.”

I looked at him.

The officer frowned.

“Explain.”

Adrian took a deep breath.

“My father wanted information.”

“Not marriage?”

“No.”

“Then why did you marry her?”

Adrian looked at me.

And for the first time all night...

I saw genuine pain in his eyes.

“Because by then...”

His voice cracked.

“I loved her.”

Nobody moved.

But I felt nothing.

Because love without honesty was just another form of betrayal.

“You loved me?” I whispered.

“Yes.”

“While hiding everything?”

“Yes.”

“While letting me believe my mother died by accident?”

His face fell.

“Yes.”

I turned away.

Because I couldn’t look at him anymore.

Then Victor spoke.

Quietly.

“But Adrian wasn’t the only one lying.”

Everyone turned.

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

Victor looked at Eleanor.

Her face changed instantly.

“No.”

Just one word.

But it sounded like fear.

Victor stepped closer.

“Claire deserves the whole truth.”

Charles’s voice became dangerous.

“Stop.”

Victor ignored him.

“Your mother didn’t just discover what Charles was doing.”

He looked at me.

“She discovered someone inside the family was helping him.”

My heart started beating faster.

“Who?”

Nobody answered.

Victor looked toward Eleanor.

The woman who had spent years judging me.

The woman who wanted my home.

The woman who sat at that dinner table and watched her son hurt me.

“She found out Eleanor knew.”

The room exploded.

“What?” I whispered.

Eleanor immediately shook her head.

“That’s absurd.”

Victor laughed.

“Is it?”

He pointed toward the files.

“Then explain why Elizabeth’s last phone call was made to you.”

Eleanor went silent.

I stared at her.

“My mother called you?”

No answer.

“Eleanor?”

Her expression changed.

Not guilt.

Fear.

Real fear.

And that frightened me more.

Because Eleanor was never afraid.

Not of anyone.

Not even me.

The officer moved toward her.

“Mrs. Cole, do you want to explain?”

She looked at Charles.

Then Adrian.

Then me.

Finally she whispered:

“I was trying to protect this family.”

My heart sank.

Protect.

That word again.

Everyone in this family used protection as an excuse for cruelty.

“You protected them,” I said.

“You didn’t protect my mother.”

Eleanor’s eyes filled slightly.

“I made a mistake.”

“What mistake?”

She looked at me.

And said something that made the entire room freeze.

“Your mother wasn’t supposed to find out.”

Silence.

The officer immediately stepped forward.

“Find out what?”

Eleanor looked terrified.

Then the basement lights suddenly went off.

Again.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Someone screamed.

A sound came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Fast footsteps.

Someone was running.

The officer turned on his flashlight.

“Stay where you are!”

But the footsteps didn’t stop.

They moved toward the hidden office.

Toward the files.

Toward the evidence.

I heard a drawer slam shut.

Then a door closing.

Someone was inside the basement with us.

Someone who knew exactly what they were looking for.

The officer rushed forward.

Too late.

The person was gone.

But they left something behind.

A small envelope on the floor.

My name was written across it.

CLAIRE.

My hands trembled as I picked it up.

Inside was a single photograph.

A photograph of me.

Taken before I met Adrian.

On the back was a message.

Six words.

May you like

Six words that made my blood turn cold.

“He was watching you first.”
