Chapter 6 - THE ROOM THAT WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO EXISTNobody moved.

The hidden passage stood open in front of us.

A narrow space behind the basement wall.

A place that should not have existed.

A place nobody in that house had admitted knowing about.

The officer stood at the entrance with his flashlight raised.

The beam disappeared into darkness.

Then he looked back at us.

“There’s a room inside.”

His voice was different now.

More serious.

More careful.

“And someone has been staying there.”

A cold feeling moved through my body.

Someone had been living beneath the house.

Not visiting.

Not hiding for a few minutes.

Living.

I looked around the basement.

At Charles.

At Eleanor.

At Adrian.

At every person who had spent years telling me this family had no secrets.

They all looked different now.

Because secrets were no longer hidden.

They were standing in front of us.

The officer turned back toward the passage.

“Everyone stays here.”

Nobody listened.

Of course they didn’t.

The Cole family had spent years controlling every situation.

They weren’t going to stand still while their world collapsed.

Charles stepped forward.

“This is private property.”

The officer didn’t turn around.

“Not anymore.”

Charles’s expression hardened.

“You don’t understand who you’re dealing with.”

The officer finally looked back.

“No.”

He held his gaze.

“I understand exactly who I’m dealing with.”

Then he disappeared into the passage.

The rest of us waited.

The silence was unbearable.

I stood beside Adrian.

But for the first time since I met him...

I felt like I was standing beside a stranger.

A few minutes earlier, I would have reached for his hand.

Now I couldn’t even stand near him without feeling sick.

He noticed.

“Claire.”

I didn’t look at him.

“Don’t.”

“I need to explain.”

“You’ve had two years.”

My voice was quiet.

“Two years to explain.”

He looked down.

“I was afraid.”

I turned toward him.

“Afraid of what?”

“Losing you.”

I stared at him.

The answer almost made me angry.

“You were afraid of losing me?”

“Yes.”

“While lying to me?”

He had no response.

“While investigating me?”

Silence.

“While hiding the truth about my mother?”

His face tightened.

“I know.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“You know nothing about what this feels like.”

A tear slipped down my cheek.

“You got to choose when I learned the truth.”

“You got to decide what I deserved to know.”

“You controlled my entire life without me knowing.”

Adrian looked destroyed.

But I couldn’t feel sorry for him anymore.

Because pain didn’t erase betrayal.

Then Maya spoke.

Quietly.

“Claire is right.”

Everyone looked at her.

Adrian’s face changed.

“Maya.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

Her voice trembled.

“But I should have said this years ago.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

She looked toward the hidden passage.

“I knew there was something wrong.”

The room became still.

“When?” I asked.

Maya swallowed.

“The first year I married into this family.”

She looked at Charles.

“I found the room.”

Everyone froze.

Charles’s expression changed instantly.

“You said nothing.”

Maya laughed bitterly.

“What was I supposed to do?”

She pointed around the room.

“Everyone here already knew how this family worked.”

Her eyes moved to me.

“I was scared.”

That sentence hit me.

Because for the first time, I understood something.

Maya wasn’t protecting them because she agreed.

She was protecting herself because she was trapped.

“What did you see inside?” I asked.

Maya looked away.

“Not everything.”

“That’s not an answer.”

She closed her eyes.

“I saw your mother’s name.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

“In the files.”

She looked at me.

“Elizabeth Bennett.”

The room became colder.

“There were hundreds of documents about her.”

“What kind of documents?”

Maya hesitated.

“Her medical records.”

My stomach tightened.

“Why would they have my mother’s medical records?”

Nobody answered.

Then the officer returned.

His face was serious.

Everyone turned toward him.

“What did you find?” Charles asked.

The officer ignored him.

He looked directly at me.

“Mrs. Bennett.”

I nodded.

“There is a room.”

“I know.”

He continued.

“It appears to have been used as a surveillance room.”

My heart sank.

“Surveillance?”

He nodded.

“There are monitors.”

“Recording equipment.”

“Hard drives.”

“And hundreds of hours of footage.”

I felt sick.

“Footage of what?”

The officer looked uncomfortable.

“People inside this house.”

A silence followed.

Then I understood.

The cameras.

The hidden cameras.

The photographs.

The files.

They weren’t just collecting information.

They were watching people.

Controlling them.

The officer continued.

“There are recordings from years ago.”

“Some of them appear to involve your mother.”

My breath caught.

“Can we see them?”

He hesitated.

“Yes.”

Then he added:

“But you need to understand something.”

“What?”

His expression changed.

“The most recent recording was made tonight.”

Nobody moved.

Tonight.

Someone had been recording the dinner.

Someone had recorded Adrian attacking me.

Someone had recorded everything.

“Can we watch it?” I asked.

The officer nodded.

He brought one of the monitors into the basement.

The screen turned on.

A list of files appeared.

Dates.

Times.

Names.

Then one file appeared at the top.

DINNER — CLAIRE BENNETT — TODAY

My hands became cold.

The officer opened it.

The video began.

The angle was different from where we had been sitting.

Higher.

Hidden.

Watching everything.

I saw myself at the table.

I saw Adrian.

I saw his family.

I watched myself defend my home.

Then I saw Adrian pick up the plate.

The room became silent.

Even Adrian couldn’t look away.

The video continued.

The plate hit me.

Everyone watched.

Nobody helped.

Then something happened that made my blood freeze.

The camera moved.

Slowly.

As if someone had adjusted it.

The view changed.

It focused on one person.

Not Adrian.

Not Charles.

Not Eleanor.

Maya.

She was standing between me and Adrian.

But the camera zoomed in on her face.

And then...

A voice came through the recording.

A voice that wasn’t from the room.

Someone behind the camera.

A whisper.

“Finally.”

Everyone froze.

The officer stopped the video.

“Did anyone else hear that?”

Nobody answered.

Because everyone had heard it.

Someone had been watching us.

Someone had been controlling the cameras.

Someone had been inside that hidden room.

The officer looked toward the passage.

“Whoever was using this room left recently.”

I stared at the screen.

At the hidden camera angle.

At the person who had been watching our family destroy itself.

Then I noticed something.

A small detail in the corner of the video.

A reflection.

A person standing behind the camera.

I stepped closer.

“Wait.”

The officer looked at me.

“What?”

I pointed at the screen.

“Zoom in.”

He did.

The image became clearer.

The reflection showed a face.

A familiar face.

Someone standing inside the hidden room.

Someone who had been there the entire time.

My blood turned cold.

Because the person watching us...

Was not a stranger.

It was someone I knew.

Someone who had been sitting at that dinner table.

Someone who had just watched Adrian attack me.

I whispered the name.

“No
”

The screen showed the reflection clearly.

And everyone in the basement finally saw the truth.

The person behind the cameras was...

Eleanor Cole.

The woman who had spent the entire night pretending she was powerless.

The woman who claimed she only wanted a place to live.

The woman who had watched her son hurt me.

She had been watching all of us.

And the next file on the computer had her name on it.

ELIZABETH BENNETT — FINAL NIGHT.

The officer reached toward the keyboard.

My heart stopped.

May you like

Because after fifteen years...

I was finally about to see what happened to my mother.
