Chapter 8 - THE CONFESSION ADRIAN NEVER WANTED TO MAKE“I was there the night your mother died.”

Those words didn’t sound real.

They couldn’t.

Not coming from him.

Not from Adrian.

The man who held me when I cried after losing my mother.

The man who told me he understood my pain.

The man who said he wished he could have met Elizabeth Bennett because she sounded like an incredible woman.

He had known her.

He had been there.

And he never told me.

The basement suddenly felt too small.

The walls seemed to move closer.

The air became impossible to breathe.

I stared at him.

Waiting.

Waiting for him to say something that would make sense.

A lie would have been easier.

A lie would have been familiar.

But Adrian looked exhausted.

Like he had been carrying this secret for years.

“Say something,” I whispered.

His eyes filled with regret.

“Claire
”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“Not my name.”

My voice cracked.

“Not anymore.”

He stopped.

The officer looked at him.

“Mr. Cole, you need to explain what happened.”

Adrian didn’t answer immediately.

His eyes stayed on me.

“I never wanted you to find out this way.”

I almost laughed.

“This way?”

I pointed toward the screen.

“My mother’s last moments are recorded in a hidden room under your family’s house.”

I looked around.

“Your family watched her die.”

My voice grew louder.

“And you’re worried about how I found out?”

Adrian lowered his head.

“I know how this looks.”

“No.”

I stepped back.

“You don’t.”

My hands were shaking.

“You have no idea what this feels like.”

“You knew.”

“You knew the entire time.”

Adrian swallowed.

“Yes.”

The answer hurt more than I expected.

Because some small part of me still hoped he would deny it.

Still hoped there was another explanation.

There wasn’t.

“Why?”

The word came out broken.

“Why did you marry me?”

Adrian closed his eyes.

And for several seconds, he said nothing.

Then:

“Because I failed.”

Nobody understood.

Except maybe him.

“I was supposed to find what your mother hid.”

He looked at the files.

“The documents.”

“The evidence.”

“The thing my father believed could destroy him.”

I stared at him.

“And you couldn’t find it.”

“No.”

“So you stayed.”

His face tightened.

“Yes.”

My heart felt like it was breaking apart.

“You stayed because you thought I would eventually lead you to it.”

Adrian looked away.

“At first.”

That answer was somehow worse.

“At first?”

He looked back at me.

“I swear to you, Claire
”

His voice shook.

“After I knew you, everything changed.”

I stared at him.

“Don’t.”

He stopped.

“Do not try to turn this into some love story.”

My eyes filled with tears.

“You don’t get to betray someone and then ask them to focus on the good memories.”

Adrian looked destroyed.

“I did love you.”

I wiped my face.

“Maybe you did.”

A pause.

“But you also used me.”

He didn’t argue.

Because he knew.

The officer stepped forward.

“Start from the beginning.”

Adrian looked at him.

“What?”

“The night Elizabeth Bennett died.”

The basement became silent again.

Adrian looked at the floor.

Like he was looking fifteen years into the past.

“I was twenty-four.”

His voice was low.

“My father had just discovered your mother was investigating him.”

Charles looked away.

“I was told to find out what she knew.”

I felt sick.

“You followed her?”

Adrian nodded.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I thought I could stop it.”

I stared at him.

“Stop what?”

His eyes moved toward Charles.

“My father.”

Charles immediately reacted.

“Be careful, Adrian.”

Adrian looked at him.

And for the first time, there was no fear.

Only anger.

“No.”

His voice was stronger.

“I spent fifteen years being afraid of you.”

The room went still.

“You made me believe I had no choice.”

Charles’s face hardened.

“You’re confused.”

Adrian laughed quietly.

“No.”

“I’m finally remembering.”

Nobody spoke.

Then Adrian continued.

“The night Elizabeth died, I followed her because I knew she was meeting someone.”

“Who?” I asked.

He looked at me.

“Your father.”

My heart stopped.

“My father?”

Adrian nodded.

“Yes.”

The words felt impossible.

“My father disappeared when I was a child.”

“I know.”

“Then why was he there?”

Adrian looked at Charles.

“Because he was trying to help her.”

The room became silent.

My father.

The man I thought abandoned us.

Was involved.

Was trying to protect my mother.

Adrian continued.

“Elizabeth had discovered the financial records.”

“She knew Charles had been moving money through fake companies.”

“She knew people were being threatened.”

“But she also found something worse.”

I waited.

“What?”

Adrian’s expression changed.

“She found out Charles wasn’t working alone.”

Everyone looked at him.

Charles’s face went pale.

The officer noticed.

“Who else?”

Adrian looked at Eleanor.

Nobody moved.

Eleanor immediately shook her head.

“No.”

Adrian’s voice became quiet.

“My mother.”

The words hit the room.

I looked at Eleanor.

“My mother?”

Adrian nodded.

“She helped cover everything.”

Eleanor’s expression collapsed.

“That’s not true.”

Adrian looked at her.

“I was there.”

She stepped back.

“You don’t remember everything.”

“Yes, I do.”

His voice hardened.

“I remember you handing my father the bottle.”

The entire room froze.

The same bottle from the video.

The one with my name.

I looked at Eleanor.

“You poisoned my mother?”

“No.”

Her answer came instantly.

Too quickly.

“I didn’t.”

“Then explain the bottle.”

Eleanor couldn’t.

For the first time...

She had no words.

The officer stepped toward her.

“Mrs. Cole, you need to explain.”

She looked around.

At Charles.

At Adrian.

At me.

Then something strange happened.

She started crying.

Not fake tears.

Not the dramatic kind.

Real tears.

“I never wanted her dead.”

The sentence made everyone freeze.

Because it was not a denial.

It was a confession.

“What did you do?” I whispered.

Eleanor looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw something besides arrogance.

I saw guilt.

“I was supposed to scare her.”

My stomach dropped.

“Scare her?”

Eleanor nodded.

“Charles told me Elizabeth had to stop.”

“What did you give her?”

She closed her eyes.

“A sedative.”

The room became silent.

“She was supposed to sleep.”

“She was supposed to forget.”

“She was supposed to be frightened enough to leave.”

My voice shook.

“But she died.”

Eleanor started crying harder.

“I know.”

The officer stepped closer.

“And after she died?”

Eleanor looked away.

“Charles handled it.”

“Handled it how?”

Nobody answered.

Then Maya spoke.

Quietly.

“By making it look like an accident.”

Everyone turned toward her.

Maya’s face was pale.

But she continued.

“I found the paperwork.”

Charles stared at her.

“Maya.”

She shook her head.

“No more.”

She looked at me.

“I should have told you years ago.”

My heart hurt.

“How much did you know?”

Maya swallowed.

“Enough to be afraid.”

The officer looked toward the hidden files.

“We need everything.”

He started collecting documents.

Then Adrian suddenly looked toward the computer.

His face changed.

“What?” I asked.

He stepped closer.

“There’s another file.”

The officer looked.

“What file?”

Adrian pointed at the screen.

A folder hidden beneath the others.

One that had not been opened.

The name appeared.

CLAIRE BENNETT — AFTER ELIZABETH

My blood ran cold.

“What is that?”

Nobody answered.

Adrian looked terrified.

Because he knew.

The officer opened it.

Inside was one video.

Recorded years after my mother’s death.

The date appeared.

Six months before Adrian and Claire’s first meeting.

I looked at my husband.

My voice barely existed.

“What happened six months before we met?”

Adrian stared at the screen.

Then whispered:

“That was when my father decided you were the next target.”

The video began playing.

And the first thing we saw...

Was Adrian’s father sitting in this exact basement.

Talking about me.

And beside him...

Was Adrian.

But he wasn’t being ordered to investigate me.

He was being warned.

Charles looked directly at the camera.

And said:

“If she finds out who you really are, Adrian...”

A pause.

“...we lose everything.”

The screen went black.

Then one final sentence appeared.

A sentence that made my entire body freeze.

May you like

ADRIAN WAS NEVER THE ONLY ONE WATCHING CLAIRE.

SOMEONE WAS WATCHING ADRIAN TOO.
