Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCHThe photograph slipped from my fingers.

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The basement was so quiet that I could hear the sound of my own breathing.

The message on the back of the photograph burned into my mind.

“He was watching you first.”

I looked at the picture again.

It was me.

Years before I met Adrian.

Before our first date.

Before he walked into my life and convinced me I had finally found someone who loved me for who I was.

Someone had been watching me.

Studying me.

Planning something.

And the person who wrote that message wanted me to know.

The officer picked up the photograph carefully.

“Where did this come from?”

I looked around the basement.

“Someone left it here.”

The officer shined his flashlight toward the hallway.

“No one should have been able to enter or leave without us seeing them.”

Everyone looked uneasy.

Everyone except Charles.

He was staring at the photograph.

Not confused.

Not surprised.

Afraid.

I noticed.

And so did the officer.

“Mr. Cole.”

Charles looked up.

“Yes?”

“You recognize this photo?”

A pause.

A long pause.

“No.”

The officer studied him.

“That was not a convincing answer.”

Charles’s jaw tightened.

“You’re making assumptions.”

I looked at him.

“Funny.”

Everyone turned toward me.

“Because that’s exactly what your family has been doing to me all night.”

My voice became colder.

“You assumed I would give up my home.”

“You assumed I would give away my money.”

“You assumed Adrian could scare me into silence.”

I looked at the photograph.

“And now I find out you’ve been watching me for years.”

Nobody responded.

Because there was nothing they could say.

The truth was finally louder than them.

The officer turned toward the basement entrance.

“We need to secure this area.”

He spoke into his radio.

“Possible evidence tampering. Possible unknown person inside the residence.”

Charles immediately reacted.

“This is becoming ridiculous.”

The officer looked at him.

“No.”

His voice was firm.

“What’s ridiculous is that a woman was assaulted, a hidden room was discovered, and now someone has apparently entered a secured area to remove evidence.”

Charles said nothing.

For the first time...

He looked powerless.

I turned toward Adrian.

He had been silent since the photograph appeared.

Too silent.

“Did you know?”

His eyes lifted.

“Know what?”

“That someone was watching me.”

He hesitated.

And that hesitation hurt.

Because every hesitation from him was another piece of the truth.

“I suspected.”

My chest tightened.

“You suspected?”

Adrian stepped closer.

“Claire, listen to me.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“I am done listening without answers.”

His face fell.

“I found out my father had information about you before we met.”

“What kind of information?”

He looked away.

“I don’t know everything.”

I almost laughed.

Again.

The same answer.

“I don’t know everything.”

“That’s what everyone says when they know enough to hurt me.”

Adrian lowered his voice.

“I was trying to find out the truth.”

“No.”

I stared at him.

“You were trying to find what my mother left behind.”

Silence.

That was enough.

The officer looked at Adrian.

“Did you ever search Claire’s belongings?”

Adrian didn’t answer.

“Mr. Cole.”

Adrian swallowed.

“Once.”

My heart dropped.

“Once?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

He closed his eyes.

“After we got married.”

I felt sick.

My husband had searched my things.

My home.

My private life.

While sleeping beside me.

“What were you looking for?”

He whispered:

“The documents.”

The basement felt smaller.

The walls felt closer.

“The documents your family believed my mother hid?”

“Yes.”

“Did you find them?”

“No.”

“Did you tell your father?”

Adrian didn’t answer.

The officer looked at him.

“That means yes.”

Adrian looked down.

“Yes.”

I stepped back.

Every memory suddenly looked different.

Every conversation.

Every smile.

Every moment I thought was love.

How much of it was real?

A sound came from behind us.

A small noise.

Like something moving.

Everyone turned.

The officer immediately raised his flashlight.

The beam moved across the basement wall.

Nothing.

Then Maya spoke.

Quietly.

“Wait.”

Everyone looked at her.

She was staring at the photograph in my hand.

Her face had gone pale.

“Where did you get that?”

I looked at her.

“Someone left it.”

She shook her head slowly.

“No.”

Her voice trembled.

“That’s impossible.”

“Why?” I asked.

Because Maya looked like she had just seen a ghost.

“Because that picture was taken inside this house.”

Nobody moved.

“What?”

Maya stepped closer.

“I’ve seen it before.”

My stomach tightened.

“Where?”

She looked toward Charles.

Then Eleanor.

Then Adrian.

Finally she whispered:

“In your husband’s office.”

My eyes moved to Adrian.

His face changed.

“Maya.”

She ignored him.

“You kept a file on her.”

The accusation hung in the air.

I stared at Adrian.

“A file?”

He looked destroyed.

“Claire
”

“No.”

My voice cracked.

“Answer me.”

“Did you have a file on me?”

He didn’t answer immediately.

Then:

“Yes.”

The room went silent.

I felt like I couldn’t breathe.

“What was in it?”

Adrian looked at me.

“Everything.”

My blood ran cold.

“Everything?”

“Your job.”

“Your friends.”

“Your schedule.”

“Your family.”

“Your habits.”

Each word felt like another wound.

“You were tracking me.”

“At first.”

“At first?”

Adrian stepped forward.

“Claire, please understand.”

“Understand what?”

My voice rose.

“That you were spying on me before you loved me?”

He had no answer.

Then Maya said something even worse.

“There was another file.”

Everyone turned toward her.

Maya looked terrified.

“A second file.”

Charles immediately said:

“Maya, stop.”

But she continued.

“The first one was about Claire.”

She looked at me.

“The second one was about Elizabeth.”

My mother.

My heartbeat increased.

“What second file?”

Maya looked at the basement wall.

“I don’t know where it went.”

The officer stepped closer.

“What was inside?”

Maya swallowed.

“Photos.”

“Documents.”

“Medical records.”

“And
”

She stopped.

“And what?”

Her eyes filled with fear.

“A recording.”

My hands went cold.

“A recording of what?”

Maya looked at me.

“Your mother’s last conversation.”

Nobody spoke.

The officer immediately turned toward Charles.

“Where is that recording?”

Charles remained silent.

The officer stepped closer.

“Mr. Cole.”

Still nothing.

Then Eleanor suddenly spoke.

“It’s gone.”

Everyone turned toward her.

“What?” I asked.

Eleanor looked like she regretted speaking.

“It disappeared years ago.”

The officer frowned.

“Who had access to it?”

Eleanor looked at Adrian.

Then away.

My heart sank.

“Adrian?”

He looked shocked.

“No.”

But his reaction came too quickly.

Too defensively.

And I noticed.

The officer noticed too.

Before anyone could say another word...

A phone rang again.

This time...

It wasn’t upstairs.

It wasn’t in the office.

It was inside the basement.

Everyone looked around.

The sound was coming from behind the hidden wall.

The officer moved closer.

He pressed his hand against the stone.

Then stopped.

“There’s a space behind this wall.”

My breathing slowed.

Another secret.

Another hidden place.

The officer looked at the others.

“Who built this room?”

Nobody answered.

Then Charles whispered:

“My father.”

The officer looked at him.

“Why?”

Charles stared at the wall.

And for the first time...

The powerful Charles Cole looked terrified.

“Because he didn’t trust anyone.”

A pause.

“Not even his own family.”

The officer began searching for the hidden entrance.

After several minutes, he found a small mechanism.

A click.

The wall moved.

A narrow passage appeared.

Cold air rushed out.

Inside was darkness.

But something else was there.

A smell.

Old paper.

Dust.

And something metallic.

The officer lifted his flashlight.

Then froze.

“What?” I asked.

He slowly turned around.

His face had changed.

“There’s someone inside.”

Everyone stopped breathing.

The officer stepped into the passage.

A few seconds passed.

Then we heard him speak.

“Sir?”

Silence.

Then:

“Ma’am?”

I stepped forward.

“What is it?”

The officer looked back at us.

And his next words changed everything.

“There’s a room in here.”

A pause.

“And someone has been living inside it.”

My blood went cold.

Because hidden beneath the house...

Someone had been watching us.

Living beside us.

Waiting.

And suddenly I realized something terrifying.

May you like

The person who left the photograph...

Had never left the house at all.
