Chapter 12 - THE BORDER PLAN

Border agents were notified.

Airports too.

Linda could not legally travel with Noah.

But legal had never stopped her.

Warren found emails with a document broker in El Paso.

Fake consent forms.

A notarized letter supposedly signed by Ryan.

A second passport application using a different last name.

Hale had become Hart.

Noah Hart.

Then the broker gave police an address.

A farmhouse near the Oklahoma line.

SWAT entered before dawn.

Linda was not there.

But the house was ready.

Nursery.

Crib.

Formula.

Family photographs with my face cut out.

Pictures of Ryan as a child taped beside Noah's.

On the refrigerator was a schedule.

MONDAY - DR. CRESS CALL.

TUESDAY - CROSS BORDER.

WEDNESDAY - FILE EMERGENCY PETITION.

Linda intended to take Noah, cross into Canada, then claim I had abandoned him.

"She thought procedure would turn kidnapping into custody."

Warren found a burner phone.

One unsent message to Cress:

RYAN IS WEAKER THAN THOMAS. HE WILL COME BACK TO ME.

He did not react.

Then he said, "She thinks I'm still nine."

That was the core of it.

Linda had raised a frightened child.

Then kept speaking to that child inside the adult.

Not because I asked.

Because he finally understood that becoming safe required more than saying no to Linda once.

Three days later, Linda called him.

He put Warren on the line before answering.

"Ryan."

Her voice was warm.

Motherly.

Almost normal.

He went white.

"Where are you?"

"Does Sarah still have you confused?"

"No."

"You don't mean that."

"Mom, Noah is not Emily."

Silence.

Then Linda said, "Exactly."

"What does that mean?"

"Emily was weak."

I felt sick.

"She was a baby."

"She screamed constantly."

"She was four months old."

"You don't remember."

"I remember enough."

Linda's voice sharpened.

"I kept you alive."

Ryan whispered, "You made me lie."

"I protected our family."

"No."

His voice steadied.

"You protected yourself."

For the first time, Linda sounded afraid.

Then she said, "If you really believe that, open your father's cassette."

"What cassette?"

"The one behind the blue folder."

We had seen it.

Never played it.

Linda hung up.

Ryan retrieved the tape from evidence.

The label read:

RYAN - AGE NINE.

We pressed play.

A child's voice began crying.

May you like

Ryan's voice.

"Tell me what your mother did to Emily."
