Chapter 8 - THE THIRD BABY

The third baby was named Jacob.

Linda's nephew.

Mark's older brother.

He had been eight months old.

"I thought Jacob fell."

"He did."

"Then what are you saying?"

"Your aunt dropped him."

Mark went white.

Melissa had been next door when it happened.

She heard Jacob screaming.

Then Linda yelling.

Then silence.

Jacob was on the floor beside a high chair.

Linda claimed he pushed himself out.

But Jacob could not stand.

He could barely pull up.

Melissa told Mark's mother.

The family closed ranks.

Jacob suffered a skull fracture but survived.

He grew up with seizures and developmental delays.

Ryan whispered, "Why wasn't this in Dad's trunk?"

"Because Thomas never knew."

"Your mother begged me not to tell."

For years, he had installed Linda's cameras.

Sent her photographs.

Helped her build a case against me.

All while his own brother carried the consequences of her violence.

"I didn't know," he said.

Melissa answered, "Now you do."

Now you do.

What happens next?

Police interviewed Jacob.

At thirty-two, he lived in supported housing.

He remembered little.

But his mother, Denise, finally talked.

Linda yanked him from the high chair.

He slipped.

Denise saw the end.

She lied to protect the family.

"I'm sorry," she told Mark.

I felt no satisfaction.

Just exhaustion at how many adults had fed the same silence.

Then Denise revealed something else.

Linda kept copies of everything in a private safe deposit box.

"Insurance," Denise said.

"Against who?" Warren asked.

"Against the family."

Linda collected secrets.

Affairs.

Tax problems.

Medical histories.

Anything useful.

The box was at a bank in Fort Worth.

Police got a warrant.

Inside were forty years of leverage.

And one sealed packet labeled:

RYAN - IF HE TURNS AGAINST ME.

A laboratory report.

His hands started shaking.

"What is it?"

"A DNA test."

"Whose?"

"Mine."

"And my father's."

May you like

"What does it say?"

Ryan whispered, "Thomas Hale wasn't my biological father."
