Chapter 7 - THE PAPER RYAN SIGNED

Ryan denied it.
Then Mark showed him.
A notarized authorization.
If Sarah became medically unable to care for Noah, temporary guardianship would pass to Linda.
Ryan's signature was at the bottom.
"Is that yours?"
His face emptied.
"I signed a stack of estate documents before Noah was born."
"Did you read them?"
Silence.
I already knew.
"Ryan."
"No."
Linda was cruel.
Our child.
My rights.
Our safety.
He said, "I thought it was insurance paperwork."
"You thought."
"I know."
"No. You keep saying that like knowing now fixes what you did then."
He did not argue.
Nora Fields, the family-law attorney Warren recommended, reviewed the document.
It was not automatically enforceable.
It depended on medical incapacity.
The fake report from Cress was designed to create that incapacity.
The surveillance photographs supported it.
The guardianship petition in the drawer completed it.
This had been a system.
Not one angry grandmother.
She also recommended Ryan move out temporarily.
Not because the court ordered it.
Because I needed space.
Ryan packed a bag that night.
"I don't want to leave you alone."
"You're not protecting me by staying where I don't trust you."
"Can I see Noah tomorrow?"
"With Nora arranging it."
His eyes filled.
After he left, I changed every lock.
Every password.
Every camera.
At 3:00 a.m., Noah woke crying.
Then the alarm beeped.
Back door.
The new camera showed a woman on the porch.
Not Linda.
An older woman I had never seen.
"Who are you?"
"My name is Melissa Kane."
The neighbor from Thomas's letter.
"I need to talk to you about Emily."
Melissa came inside shaking.
"I didn't tell Ryan everything in that letter."
"What did you leave out?"
"Emily wasn't the only baby Linda hurt."
May you like
My stomach dropped.
Melissa whispered, "There was another one after her."
