Chapter 5 - DR. CRESS

Dr. Martin Cress denied helping Linda until Detective Warren showed him the upload log.
Then he asked for a lawyer.
A search of his office found a file labeled HALE FAMILY.
Not about me.
About Linda.
For twenty years, Cress had documented the same pattern: rage triggered by infant crying, obsessive control, refusal to finish treatment, and one belief repeated in his notes.
Crying babies are manipulative.
Ryan read the page twice.
"Then why did he call Sarah unstable?"
Warren opened the bank records.
"Because your mother paid him."
Forty thousand dollars in one year.
The money came from the Emily Rose Family Trust.
Ryan stared at the name.
"My sister had a trust?"
Thomas had created it after Emily died. Two million dollars for pediatric safety programs.
Linda controlled it.
Now almost all of it was gone.
Management fees.
Lawyers.
Investigators.
Cress.
Ryan looked through the interview glass at his mother.
"You used Emily's money to hide what happened to Emily."
Linda said nothing.
Cress faced fraud charges and a licensing investigation.
Linda was charged with child endangerment.
A protective order kept her away from Noah.
I should have felt safe.
Then I checked the nursery camera.
There was no footage of the milk incident.
The camera had been disabled remotely.
From my phone.
Ryan stared at the security log.
"Your phone was in the kitchen."
Two nights earlier, Linda had watched me type my passcode.
Before we could call Warren, my phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
A photograph appeared.
Me asleep in the nursery chair with Noah on my chest.
Ryan had been sitting beside me that night, but the photo cut him out.
Under it:
SHE HAS MORE THAN ONE WAY TO PROVE YOU'RE UNSAFE.
I looked at Ryan.
"She isn't defending herself."
"No."
May you like
"She's building a case."
And somewhere inside our house, someone had been helping her.
