Chapter 14 - THE LETTER TO ME

The letter was written months before Noah was born.
Linda expected me to find it eventually.
That frightened me.
Sarah,
Ryan will tell you I am dangerous because that is easier than admitting what he did.
"What he did?"
Photographs.
Ryan standing outside Dr. Cress's office.
Dates from two years earlier.
Before we were trying for Noah.
Linda claimed Ryan had consulted Cress about whether I was mentally stable enough for pregnancy.
"Did you?"
"Yes."
My chest tightened.
"Why?"
"Because I was afraid."
"Of me?"
"Of having a baby."
"Then why was Cress evaluating me?"
"He wasn't supposed to."
Ryan explained.
After years of nightmares about Emily, becoming a father terrified him.
Cress redirected every conversation toward me.
Was Sarah anxious?
Did Sarah have depression?
Did Sarah want children too badly?
Those answers became raw material for the fake maternal-fitness file.
"So you fed him my private life."
"I didn't know what he was building."
"No. You just kept letting other people study me while you refused to study yourself."
He did not defend himself.
The letter contained one more truth.
He told Linda.
Linda told Cress.
Cress encouraged Ryan to proceed.
Why?
Because a grandchild would activate Thomas's estate trust.
Five million dollars became available when Ryan had his first child.
Trustee until Noah turned five:
Linda.
There it was.
Money.
Not the whole reason.
Never the whole reason.
But another reason.
Noah's birth unlocked five million dollars.
Linda wanted access.
Cress wanted contracts.
And Ryan's fear made him easy to steer.
"Can the trust be frozen?"
"Already working on it."
"What else is in the box?"
A copy of his therapy intake.
Bank records.
And a handwritten note from Linda.
If Ryan resists, remind him Sarah will learn he doubted her before they even conceived.
Blackmail.
She had stored his shame like currency.
"I am sorry."
I said, "I believe you."
Hope flickered.
Then I finished.
"That doesn't mean I'm staying married to you."
His face fell.
But he nodded.
"I understand."
Three hours later, the family trust attorney called.
May you like
Someone had tried to transfer the entire five million dollars overnight.
Using Ryan's electronic signature.
