Chapter 3 - THE SARAH FILE

The folder was six months old.

Before Noah was born.

Before Linda moved into the guest room.

Before I knew there was anything to fear.

SARAH HALE - MATERNAL FITNESS.

"What is this?"

"I've never seen it."

I blocked her.

Photographs of me.

At the grocery store.

At my OB's office.

Sitting in my car crying after a prenatal appointment.

Copies of prescription records.

Therapy notes.

A printout from a private investigator.

"You had me followed?"

She folded her arms.

"You were unstable."

"I had anxiety."

"You cried constantly."

"I was pregnant."

A draft guardianship petition.

Proposed guardian: Linda Hale.

Trigger condition: maternal psychiatric incapacity.

"Mom."

"You planned to take Noah?"

"I planned to protect him."

"From his mother?"

"From both of you."

His whole body shook.

"You were going to call me unfit too?"

Linda's eyes flicked toward him.

That was yes.

I recognized the name.

Linda's friend.

He had never treated me.

Yet he described me as displaying "probable postpartum instability" three months before Noah was even born.

It came out ugly.

"He diagnosed postpartum problems before I had a postpartum?"

Linda snapped, "I was preparing."

"For what?"

"For the reality that neither of you knows how to raise a child."

"What are you doing?"

"Creating a record."

"Sarah—"

"Do not ask me to protect your mother."

They photographed Noah's soaked bassinet.

The red marks on my wrist.

Linda's cheek.

The blue folder.

The Sarah folder.

Linda immediately claimed I had attacked her.

Paramedics checked Noah.

His lungs sounded clear.

Still, they recommended observation.

At the hospital, Ryan sat three chairs away.

He did not try to touch me.

A detective named Elise Warren arrived.

She placed the maternal-fitness folder on the table.

"Mrs. Hale, there is something else you should know."

"What?"

"This private investigator didn't just follow you."

"He followed your husband."

"Why?"

Warren slid over a photograph.

Ryan entering a storage facility.

Linda following ten minutes later.

Date: two weeks before Noah's birth.

The detective asked, "What did you put in Unit 314?"

May you like

Ryan went white.

Linda did too.
