Chapter 15 - THE FIVE MILLION

The transfer failed.

The bank had frozen the trust after Linda's arrest.

The authorization still mattered.

It was created from Ryan's home laptop.

But this time, Linda had been in custody.

Which meant someone else was still helping her.

Mark denied it.

Cress was jailed.

Linda's attorney denied involvement.

Warren traced the login.

The device fingerprint belonged to Ryan's company-issued laptop.

Ryan had it.

The laptop was there.

Installed eight months earlier.

By the company administrator.

Eric Hale.

Ryan's uncle.

Linda's older brother.

"Of course."

Eric had served as CFO of Hale Distribution for twenty years.

He was the person who would benefit most if Ryan's ownership was challenged.

If Ryan was not Thomas's biological son, Eric could argue Thomas intended the company to stay with the Hale bloodline.

Eric had known the paternity secret.

Linda told him years earlier.

He helped her hide it.

In return, she promised him control if Ryan ever "became disloyal."

Eric was not protecting Linda.

He was waiting for her to damage Ryan enough to take the company.

The five-million-dollar transfer was supposed to make Ryan look like he stole from Noah's trust.

Then Eric could push him out.

Warren arrested Eric at the office.

He tried to blame Linda.

For once, Linda blamed him back.

Their alliance collapsed within hours.

Documents poured out.

Emails.

Side agreements.

Draft board resolutions.

One described Ryan as psychologically impaired due to childhood trauma.

Another described me as postpartum unstable.

Noah was listed as "minor successor asset."

Asset.

My baby reduced to corporate language.

"I want out."

"Out of what?"

"The company."

Nora warned him not to make emotional financial decisions.

Ryan said, "Then I'll make a planned one."

He proposed selling the company to its employees over time.

No family succession.

No bloodline.

No Noah inheriting a trap.

Then the reopened Emily investigation produced a new witness.

A retired paramedic named Glenn Foster.

He remembered the Hale house.

He remembered infant Emily.

And he remembered Linda saying something at the scene that never made it into the report.

He did.

May you like

"The wrong baby survived."

Ryan went completely still.
