Chapter 17 - WHAT COMES NEXT

Ryan did what the court required.

Parenting classes.

Trauma therapy.

Infant-care training.

No shortcuts.

No family favors.

He learned things he should have learned before Noah was born.

How to respond to prolonged crying.

How to recognize overstimulation.

How to put a baby down safely when frustration rises.

How to ask for help before anger becomes action.

Not as his evaluator.

As Noah's mother.

Our separation became formal.

No mansion.

No family estate.

No locked drawers.

His second bedroom became Noah's room.

The first thing he installed was a camera.

Then he gave me administrator access.

"Why?"

"Because hidden access destroyed us."

It was not romantic.

I did not want romance.

The employee buyout of Hale Distribution began.

Eric's shares were frozen.

He kept enough.

Let the rest go where the court decided.

Linda sent letters from jail.

He gave it to Nora.

Did not read it.

Three months passed.

Noah learned to roll over.

Then laugh.

His first real belly laugh happened during one of Ryan's supervised visits when Ryan sneezed three times.

The monitor wrote:

Father responded appropriately to infant cues.

A boring sentence.

I loved it.

Boring became beautiful.

Then Noah developed a fever.

Nothing serious.

A virus.

But I panicked.

At 2:00 a.m., I called Ryan.

Not Linda.

Not my mother.

Ryan.

"I know it's late."

"I'm awake."

"Noah's temperature is 102."

"I'll meet you at urgent care."

He did.

No argument.

No taking over.

At the clinic, Noah cried during the exam.

Ryan went pale.

I saw it.

"Are you okay?"

"No."

He used the grounding technique his therapist taught him.

Five things he could see.

Four he could touch.

Three he could hear.

Then he came back.

The doctor said Noah would recover.

On the drive home, Ryan said, "I used to think being a good father meant never being afraid."

"What do you think now?"

"Being afraid and not handing the fear to your child."

Then my phone buzzed.

Nora.

And she had requested one final statement.

May you like

Not from Ryan.

From me.
