Chapter 11 - A TICKET WITH NO RETURN DATE

Renee found the answer in a private-school invoice hidden beneath shipping expenses. A service calling itself Westbridge Residential Academy had been paid to receive a six-year-old child that Friday.
“Westbridge doesn't have a campus,” Naomi said after two phone calls. “It's a company that arranges placements with other facilities. Nobody at its listed number will tell me where.”
The payment carried Lily's name, an invented behavioral diagnosis, and a signature attributed to a doctor Marcus had never met.
“Lily thought Friday meant the blue room,” he said. “She knew something was coming.”
Detective Reyes requested the placement files, while Denise placed a security flag on Lily's medical and school records. No one was allowed to release her to a person claiming to represent the family without direct verification.
At their afternoon visit, Lily sat with Marcus in a playroom. She was coloring the tail of a rabbit. When he told her she would not be going away with Celeste, she set down the crayon.
“What if Grandma gets mad?”
“Being mad doesn't give somebody the right to hurt you.”
“What if she has the big papers?”
“Then we're going to show the judge the truth.”
Lily considered this. “Even if she has more papers?”
Marcus almost smiled. “Especially then.”
Denise later told him Lily's reunification assessment was moving forward. His identity was verified, the hospital had cleared him medically for daily care, and an apartment with secure access had been inspected. There were still hearings ahead, but each small step was real.
That night, an envelope arrived at Naomi's office. Inside was a canceled Westbridge invoice and a note typed on hotel stationery:
