Chapter 15 - THE BOATHOUSE LIGHT

The storage building stood beside the family's private lake: an old boathouse Marcus had loved as a child. Police obtained access through a warrant covering property tied to the financial records. Marcus waited outside with Naomi.
Inside, investigators found empty racks, a stack of false shipping manifests, and a portable transmitter connected to the old estate security network. The transmitter had been used to send location data for a container that wasn't there. Somebody had built a false trail.
“Why bring the equipment home?” Naomi asked.
“Because no customs officer searches a grandmother's garden,” Marcus said.
A car roared down the gravel lane. Celeste had entered through the service gate, probably hoping to retrieve what remained. She braked when she saw the police vehicles and tried to reverse.
Officers stopped her before she reached the road. Celeste stood beside the car, shaking with anger.
“You've already ruined everything,” she shouted at Marcus.
He stayed behind the police line. “You did that yourself.”
She leaned forward. “Mother promised we'd be safe if the company sold. Did you think she put Lily in that room because she hated her? She wanted the child to obey when the transfer papers came.”
The words were caught on an officer's body camera. Celeste realized it a second too late and stopped talking.
Investigators recovered a small recorder from her car. It contained a conference call made days after the explosion. Celeste, Brent, and a third voice discussed the recovery contractor.
Marcus knew the third voice before the technician identified it.
