Chapter 6 - THE WATER THAT DIDN'T TAKE HIM

Six months earlier, Marcus had sailed aboard the company survey vessel Meridian to inspect a leased terminal in the Gulf. He had been arguing with the board about missing cargo records and a proposed sale of the port.
At midnight, engineer Gabriel Cruz found him in the engine room. “Don't start the backup pump,” Gabriel warned. “Somebody replaced the fitting. It will blow under pressure.”
They had barely reached the deck when fire punched through the compartment. The explosion threw Marcus overboard. Gabriel jumped after him. Their emergency beacon failed. A second, privately contracted vessel appeared in the dark—and turned away.
A fishing crew found them the next afternoon, nearly unconscious. Marcus woke weeks later in a remote clinic with a fractured leg and no documents. Armed men took Gabriel away, then moved Marcus to a warehouse under the pretense of an investigation. Every attempt to call home ended with a threat.
“You have a daughter,” one man told him. “Don't make us visit her.”
Marcus escaped eleven days before the gala after Gabriel smuggled him a phone and a set of dock coordinates. He entered Dallas quietly, planning to confront the family when he could guarantee Lily's safety. The false photographs Vivian had sent through an old private email account showed a smiling child at the estate.
Now those photographs made him sick.
At Naomi's office, Marcus traced the message that had come from Gabriel the night before his escape: CHECK COMPARTMENT SEVEN. FOLLOW THE BLUE NUMBERS.
“Could he still be alive?” Naomi asked.
“I don't know.”
His phone buzzed. A new message contained one grainy photograph: Gabriel tied to a chair in a container yard.
