Chapter 12 - THE FIRST CHILD

The note led to a former employee named June Whitaker, who had once worked at a children's charity run by Vivian. June agreed to meet in a diner off the interstate, provided the police knew where she was.

“Years ago, Vivian sponsored a boy named Eli,” June said, stirring coffee she never drank. “He was eight, in foster care. The charity called him its success story.”

Marcus remembered seeing Eli in foundation brochures. He had been nineteen then, busy believing his mother rescued everyone she touched.

“Where is he now?”

“He's twenty-three. He lives in Austin. He says Vivian used his picture to raise money, but most of it never reached his school or family. When he complained, the foundation called him ungrateful.”

June handed Reyes a folder of correspondence and receipts. She didn't pretend every rumor was fact. “These are the records I actually kept,” she said. “You'll have to ask him about the rest.”

Eli agreed to speak to investigators. He also sent Marcus a plain message: DON'T LET THEM MAKE YOUR DAUGHTER THINK SHE OWES THEM FOR FOOD.

That evening, Marcus called Lily while Denise sat nearby. She showed him a paper crown she'd made at school.

“Can I keep it?” she asked.

“Of course.”

“Even if I don't clean anything?”

He blinked away tears. “Even if you never clean another shoe in your life.”

At the station, investigators recovered a backup of the old nursery security system. It contained weeks of video, much of it painful to review. One clip showed Vivian entering the room carrying a folder marked ELI—SETTLEMENT.

She looked directly into the camera and said, “I will not make the same mistake twice.”
