Chapter 13 - THE WOMAN WHO OWNED THE CAMERAS

Reyes asked Marcus not to watch every minute of the recovered footage. Trained investigators would document what mattered without forcing a father to relive each scene.
But Marcus watched one carefully selected clip with Naomi. Lily sat on her bed holding a paper picture of him. Outside the room, Vivian's voice said, “If you tell people how we live, they will take you somewhere worse.”
Lily whispered to the picture, “Please don't be dead tomorrow.”
Marcus pressed his palms to his eyes. The silence afterward seemed louder than the clip.
“It's evidence,” Naomi said softly. “And she won't have to prove any of it alone.”
Vivian hired a public-relations firm. A statement accused Marcus of fabricating videos and manipulating an elderly woman. A gala guest, reporter Ava Grant, asked Naomi whether she could publish footage without identifying Lily.
“Only if you focus on the people in power,” Naomi told her. “The child is not your headline.”
Ava published a report about the trust filing, the locked room, and the identity documents. Lily's face never appeared. Donors began asking the foundation where their money had gone.
Meanwhile, the forensic technician traced an administrator account that had erased nursery recordings. It belonged to Celeste, but the logins had originated from Vivian's tablet.
“This isn't a glitch,” Reyes said. “It's an instruction.”
Then a call came from Sterling Harbor's board secretary. The directors were meeting that night to approve the terminal sale Marcus had opposed before the voyage.

“And,” the secretary added, “your mother says she has a proxy signed by you.”
