Chapter 19 - WHAT THE FILE PROVED

The clerk, Patricia Lowe, described how a supervisor had replaced the recovered body's identification packet. The dental records attached to Marcus's death certificate belonged to an unrelated victim of an earlier maritime incident. A payment from a Sterling-controlled company had followed within days.

“Did you see who authorized the replacement?” the prosecutor asked.

“I saw the signed instruction,” Patricia said. “It came from Mrs. Vivian Sterling's office.”

Naomi squeezed Marcus's shoulder once. He kept his eyes on the witness, not his mother.

The jury heard the rest of the evidence over several days. When verdicts were returned, Brent was convicted on charges connected to the sabotage and confinement. Celeste was convicted of financial offenses and abuse-related charges supported by the records and testimony. Vivian was convicted of conspiracy and fraud-related counts. Sentencing would follow. Other civil disputes over foundation funds and trust restitution remained under court supervision.

No verdict returned the months Marcus had lost. None gave Lily back the childhood evenings she had spent listening for footsteps outside the blue room.

Afterward, reporters crowded the courthouse steps. Marcus had prepared a statement, but when he saw Hazel waiting beside Naomi, he put it away.

“Are you going to say anything?” Ava Grant asked.

“Only this: my daughter deserves a life that isn't a public spectacle. So does every child harmed by people who confuse power with love.”

He walked away without another word.

That afternoon, a court-appointed administrator confirmed that Lily's trust would remain protected while recovery proceedings continued. Marcus wasn't interested in buying the mansion back. He had already asked that the portrait be taken down.

At home, Lily held up a new drawing. It showed him beneath an enormous blue sky.

“Can we hang this one instead?” she asked.
