Chapter 8 - THE BAG BEHIND THE PAINTING

Marcus returned to the mansion with police and a warrant. He wasn't there to fight with his mother. He was there to find the bag.

The memorial portrait had been removed, leaving a pale rectangle on the ballroom wall. Celeste claimed the art had gone into storage. Reyes wasn't interested in her explanation.

“We have authorization to search the east wing and the storage rooms,” he said.

Under the gallery stairs, officers found the painted wooden crate used to transport the portrait. A black equipment bag rested beneath the canvas. Inside were two security drives and a camera with a cracked screen.

Marcus recognized the camera. He had kept it aboard Meridian to record inspection work. He'd once used it to film Lily riding her first bicycle.

“That's mine,” he said.

The digital-forensics technician sealed it in an evidence bag. “We'll image the device. Nobody presses buttons until we preserve what's on it.”

Celeste folded her arms. “You won't find anything except videos of a man who wasn't careful.”

“Then you won't mind us looking,” Reyes replied.

Naomi was waiting on the porch when Marcus came out. “One of the gala guests forwarded footage to a reporter,” she said. “Your mother is claiming you staged Lily's injuries to seize the estate.”

Marcus's first instinct was to go straight to the cameras. Naomi stopped him.

“Lily doesn't need a television war. She needs a father who stays.”

That evening, the forensic team recovered a thirty-second clip from Meridian: Brent standing beside compartment seven, holding a metal case marked with blue inspection numbers.

The timestamp was two hours after Brent had sworn he left the dock.
