Chapter 7 - HAZEL'S COOKIE TIN

Hazel met Marcus and Detective Reyes in the hospital cafeteria. She brought an old blue cookie tin and held it in both hands.

“I should have spoken sooner,” she said. “I thought Mrs. Sterling would fire me, and then there'd be nobody to watch Lily.”

Inside were copies of unpaid pediatric appointments, photographs of chores assigned to Lily, and handwritten notices from Celeste: NO DINNER UNTIL WORK COMPLETED. On a small notebook page Hazel had recorded each time a door was locked, a meal withheld, or a guest was told Lily was “at boarding school.”

Reyes turned the pages slowly. “Why did you keep dates?”

“My own mother once told me, if you cannot stop a powerful person, remember exactly what she did.”

Marcus couldn't look at the photographs for long. “Why didn't I know?”

Hazel met his eyes. “Because they made everyone who cared about her believe you were gone. And they made Lily believe caring was dangerous.”

Denise brought Lily in for their scheduled visit. Marcus sat on the floor, well below her eye level, with crayons and paper. Lily drew a lake and two stick figures holding hands.

“That's us,” she said.

“Where should we go next?”

“Someplace without a big picture of you.”

He swallowed. “We can do that.”

Lily colored a blue kite in the corner. Then she leaned close. “Daddy, Aunt Celeste came to the blue room with a black bag.”

“What was in it?”

“She said she was hiding the only thing that could wake you up.”

Lily pointed to the blue cookie tin. “It made the same clicking noise as that.”
