Chapter 1 - THE BOOT

Captain Adrian Ward kicked Mara Voss over the side of his ship while thirty sailors watched.
"MAN OVERBOARD!" somebody screamed.
She caught a glimpse of Ward's polished boot withdrawing, his face hard and perfectly calm, and the young woman behind him reaching for her too late.
Then the Pacific swallowed her.
The impact drove the air out of Mara's chest. Freezing saltwater rushed into her nose. She couldn't tell which way was up until a pale stripe of sunlight trembled overhead.
Kick. Find the light. Keep moving.
She broke the surface and sucked in air that tasted of diesel. Forty feet above her, the USS Resolute kept cutting through the water.
"Throw her a ring!" a woman shouted.
An orange life ring spun from the rail, hit the water twenty yards from Mara, and bounced on the swell.
"Port engine, stop!" another voice yelled from the deck.
But the ship didn't stop.
Mara heard Ward's voice through an external speaker, flat as an order on a shopping list. "There is no authorized recovery. Clear the rail."
A sailor leaned over the rail and shouted, "Captain, she's alive!"
"I said clear the rail."
Mara reached the ring. A line trailed behind it, loose and useless. Someone had cut it. She shoved her arms through the center anyway and gripped the slick plastic as the Resolute's wake knocked her sideways.
Sixteen months earlier, Owen's last message from the sinking Mercy Bell had said he could see the Resolute's lights.
Ward thought he had kicked his last witness into the ocean. He didn't know Mara had seen the red emergency override on the bridge before he attacked her. He didn't know she had photographed it. And he had never noticed the small rescue beacon fastened inside her jacket.
Mara's numb thumb found its switch.
A green light blinked once. Then twice.
May you like
She looked down at the tiny screen. Three words appeared, and her heart lurched.
SIGNAL NOT SENT.
