Chapter 15 - THE SECOND FILE

"What second file?" Rowan demanded.

Pierce set two folders on the table. One contained the recorder recovered from the Resolute. The other held a report issued sixteen months earlier, at the close of the first Mercy Bell inquiry.

"Someone created a replacement log before the accident review," Pierce said. "That report is built around it. The timestamps are precise, the communications are clean, and the ship appears to respond to the distress call five minutes too late."

"It did respond," Mara said. "Just not the way the report says."

Investigators played the audio excerpt from Mara's card, now checked against preserved radio and navigation records. Static filled the room. Then Owen's voice emerged, strained but unmistakable.

"This is medical vessel Mercy Bell. We are taking water. Eleven souls aboard. Navy ship to our north, please answer."

A bridge watch officer answered on the recording. "Distress received. Request permission to alter course for rescue."

Three seconds of silence.

Then Ward: "Negative. Continue GLASSWAKE recovery."

Jo pressed a hand against her mouth. Mara sat absolutely still.

A second voice entered, quieter than Ward's, coming over the ship's internal command channel. "The prototype is the priority, Captain. Do not compromise the operation."

Rowan made the technician replay it.

Mara knew the voice. She had heard it at Owen's memorial service, offering sympathy with one hand on her mother's shoulder.

"Kessler," she said.

Pierce nodded. "The recording may establish the sequence. We'll still verify every channel, signature, and voice."

"What happened to the pod?" Rowan asked.

"Recovered that night. Sent to a Greywater warehouse after the ship returned."

Mara stood too quickly, grimacing as her bruised hip protested. "If that pod still exists, it'll prove where the Resolute was when the distress call came."

Pierce's phone rang. She answered, listened, then stepped to the door.

"A judge signed the search warrant," she said. "The Greywater warehouse has been cleared for entry."

She paused.

"But the building is on fire."
