Chapter 18 - THE LAST COMMAND

The former communications specialist was named Daniel Price.

He looked older than forty-eight when he entered the interview room. "Kessler ordered the false report," Price said. "Ward followed it. But there was another voice on the command line."

Pierce glanced at Rowan. "Whose voice?"

"A Greywater operations director. Not an admiral. A contractor. He said the pod contained test data worth more than the ship."

Mara stared at him. "Eleven people."

"I know," Price said. "I knew it then. I should've reported it."

He slid the envelope across the table. Inside were handwritten notes, signed maintenance records, and the name of the Greywater executive who had ordered the warehouse fire. The notes matched the newly recovered audio, including a brief call routed through the private contractor's communications system.

Ward's defense attorney tried to pin the entire rescue failure on Kessler. Kessler's counsel insisted the contractor had misunderstood a technical discussion. Then Pierce presented the authenticated timeline: Ward knew the Mercy Bell was sinking, heard repeated pleas for rescue, and personally rejected a request to turn. Sixteen months later, he kicked the woman investigating him into the sea.

"Orders don't erase the decision you made," Rowan told Ward during a recorded command interview.

"You have no idea what pressure we were under."

"Tell the eleven families," Mara said from beside her attorney. "Tell them why a machine mattered more."

Ward looked up. For a moment, she saw no hero, no monster, just a man whose excuses had finally run out.

"I thought another ship would come," he muttered.

"You knew there wasn't another ship," Mara said.

Ward said nothing.

Pierce's phone buzzed. She read the new warrant notice, then turned to Rowan.

"Federal agents are moving on Kessler and the Greywater executive," she said.

Another call came before she finished. The Greywater executive had fled his office.

His private plane was already taxiing.
