Chapter 6 - THE WRONG RESCUE

The Blue Heron shuddered and lost speed.

"We've got one engine left," Jo said. "That'll have to be enough."

The dark launch slid alongside until Mara could see three men wearing rain jackets with no insignia.

"They aren't military," Mara said.

"How can you tell?" Willa asked.

"One of them just called me by a name I haven't used publicly in five years. They were briefed."

A man on the launch called through a loudhailer. "Mara Voss. We need to discuss classified property in your possession."

"Then ask for a lawyer," Mara called back.

He pulled out a set of bolt cutters and pointed at the Blue Heron's tow line. "Last warning."

Jo jerked the wheel. The wounded research vessel lurched across the launch's bow, leaving the other pilot to brake hard or collide.

"Coast Guard Sector, Mayday relay," Jo said into the marine radio. "Civilian vessel under active interference after recovery of a person overboard. Our position is being transmitted now."

The reply crackled through almost instantly. "Blue Heron, this is Cutter Alder. We have your position. Keep your passengers inside. We're coming to you."

A bright white flare climbed above the horizon. Cutter Alder was closer than the men in the launch had expected.

One man leaned out to photograph Mara before they disappeared.

Willa exhaled. "They're leaving."

"They weren't supposed to be seen," Mara said.

Mara checked the waterproof pouch holding a photograph and a sealed memory card. She had never claimed those items could convict Ward by themselves. They were clues, not a verdict.

Jo helped her into a dry seat. "What's on the card?"

"The first copy of what Ward tried to bury."

The cabin radio hissed. A second voice cut across the Coast Guard channel, stern and official.

"Blue Heron, do not release that passenger to Cutter Alder. An order has been issued for her immediate detention."
