Chapter 19 - THE COST OF THE TRUTH

The plane never left the runway.
Airport police stopped it at the far end of the taxiway while federal agents served the arrest warrant. The Greywater executive walked down the steps with his hands visible, no longer protected by lawyers' letters and locked doors.
Kessler was relieved of duty pending proceedings. In a separate federal case, prosecutors filed charges connected to obstruction, witness intimidation, and the destruction of records. But the names behind the orders were finally on paper, where nobody could quietly erase them.
Ward's court-martial lasted weeks. Finch admitted altering the incident coordinates after Ward threatened him and accepted responsibility for his own conduct. Davis testified about the cut life-ring line. Naomi described the kick and the photograph of her son. Ortega explained the missing camera minute. Jo told the court how men in a dark launch tried to keep Mara from rescue.
Then Mara testified.
"Why did you go aboard the Resolute?" Hale asked.
"Because the first report didn't match my brother's last message."
"And why didn't you stop?"
Mara swallowed. "Because somebody else would have to bury the next person."
Ward looked at the table as the members returned their findings. He was convicted of attempting to murder Mara, assault, obstruction, and offenses arising from his deliberate failure to respond to the Mercy Bell's distress. The sentence included confinement and dismissal from the service, subject to required reviews and appeals.
Outside the building, reporters shouted questions. Mara walked past them to her mother, who stood holding Owen's photograph.
"Did we win?" Carol asked.
"We got the truth."
Naomi approached with Eli beside her. The boy looked at Mara's bruised face and asked in a small voice, "Are you the lady my mom helped save?"
"Your mom helped save a lot of people," Mara told him.
Eli smiled and put his hand in Naomi's.
Across the crowd, a young reporter raised a folder. "Ms. Voss! We found another rescue report with the same false time codes!"
May you like
Mara turned.
The date on the folder was three years before the Mercy Bell sank.
