Chapter 14 - THE MAN AT THE DOOR

NCIS reached Naomi's sister before the stranger could leave.

His name was Garrett Sloan, a private security contractor employed by Greywater Systems. He claimed he had come to deliver a legal notice. The photographs on his phone told a different story: Eli at the front door, Naomi's sister outside the grocery store, and Mara entering the Coast Guard clinic.

"Someone gave him our locations," Naomi said to Pierce over a secure call. "Somebody with access to personnel records."

"We have his devices," Pierce replied. "Your family is protected. He cannot approach them."

"He knew my child's name."

Pierce didn't pretend that made it okay. "I know."

At the Coast Guard clinic, Jo Park sat beside Mara to give a formal statement. She brought June's old photograph: two sisters with sunburned faces, laughing over a birthday cake on the deck of the Mercy Bell.

"June hated having her picture taken," Jo said. "I took it because she was happy."

Mara touched the corner of the photograph. "Owen used to send me photos from that trip. Every one was crooked."

"He was trying to make people laugh," Jo said. "That's what June told me."

Pierce entered carrying a preliminary digital report. Greywater had been paid under a confidential maritime testing contract called GLASSWAKE. During the storm that sank the Mercy Bell, the Resolute had been ordered to retrieve a missing experimental sensor pod before anyone discovered the unsanctioned test.

"Who ordered it?" Mara asked.

"We don't have a signature yet. We have a payment trail and a meeting with Kessler's staff."

"They sent a ship after a machine while people were dying?"

Mara found she couldn't answer.

Pierce turned a page. "Sloan sent one text before we detained him. The recipient was saved under a single letter: K."

Mara leaned forward.

The message read: THE RECORDER IS ON ITS WAY IN. USE THE SECOND FILE.
