Chapter 10 - THE SHIP THAT WOULD NOT TURN

"We're thirty miles past the ordered turn," Finch said.

Ward stared at the dark ocean ahead. "Then the map is accurate."

"Sir, Admiral Rowan gave a direct order."

"Rowan can issue orders when she knows the whole picture."

Finch held his gaze. "Are you refusing her?"

"I'm keeping this crew away from a contaminated investigation."

The radio crackled. The fleet duty officer wanted an immediate explanation for the Resolute's heading. Ward switched the channel off.

Belowdecks, Ortega felt the new course through the ship's movement. "We can't keep waiting," Naomi said. She had learned Mara survived from a medical bulletin carried on an internal system Ward hadn't locked down. Ortega pulled the folded note from his pocket and added a second page: the original bearing readings Finch had recorded in ink. "We need somebody to get this off the ship."

A younger sailor, Seaman Davis, raised his head from the corner. "I can use the emergency position radio. Ward forgot we tested it yesterday."

"That radio is for emergencies only," Naomi said.

Davis let out a small, bitter laugh. "A captain trying to make witnesses disappear sounds like one."

They waited until Ward's security patrol passed. Davis keyed the independent distress circuit, read the ship's current position, and transmitted one sentence: Commanding officer refusing lawful return order; records at risk.

He released the switch. The device beeped back an acknowledgment.

Naomi touched his shoulder. "You did good."

A voice came over the circuit. It wasn't the fleet duty officer.

"This is Admiral Kessler. Seaman Davis, put Captain Ward on immediately."

May you like

Davis stared at the handset.

Kessler added, "And tell him to bring me the woman in the locked berth."
