Chapter 17 - THE VOICE THEY BURIED

The hearing room was smaller than Mara had imagined.
She wore a plain navy blazer, her ribs still sore beneath it. Jo sat with her. Naomi and Ortega occupied the row behind them. A Navy legal officer announced that the court would review classified evidence in a closed session before deciding what could be released.
Kessler entered in dress uniform and barely glanced at Mara. He sat as if he were attending a routine briefing.
"The GLASSWAKE information involves sensitive capabilities," his attorney said. "Public disclosure could create risks that outlive this case."
Mara's lawyer, Rebecca Hale, stood. "The government can protect technical details without burying an order to abandon a distress call. The families are entitled to an honest account."
The judge reviewed the recordings, witness statements, and expert authentication in private. At last the judge returned. Technical specifications would remain sealed; the rescue decisions, times, and spoken orders could be introduced into the criminal proceedings and summarized for the families.
Outside, Mara found her mother sitting alone on a bench. Carol Voss wore the same blue cardigan she had worn to Owen's memorial. She had refused to hear the audio until she knew nobody could snatch it away again.
"Did he call for help?" Carol asked.
"Yes."
"Was he afraid?"
Mara sat beside her. "He sounded brave, Mom. And scared. People can be both."
Carol reached for her daughter's hand. "I knew it wasn't an accident. I knew somebody heard him."
Mara held on until her mother stopped shaking.
That evening, Pierce brought Mara a copy of the court's ruling. A new witness had come forward: a former communications specialist who had been ordered to replace the original Mercy Bell log. The witness had kept a dated personal notebook.
"He'll testify," Pierce said. "But only if we can protect him."

She flipped open the notebook to its final page.
Written across the bottom was a warning in block letters: WARD WAS NOT THE ONE WHO MADE THE FINAL CALL.
