Chapter 1 - THE SHIRT

"Get up, Reyes. Or are you waiting for someone to carry you?"

Ethan Ward yanked Olivia's training shirt so hard the seam split from shoulder to ribs. The sound cracked across the parade ground like a shot. Forty recruits stopped moving.

Olivia caught the torn fabric against her chest. Ethan grinned, expecting tears. For weeks he'd mocked her silence, hidden her boots, and called her Grandma because she was twenty-nine.

"Say something," he demanded.

"Back away," Olivia said.

"You don't give orders here."

A shadow crossed the gravel. Colonel Nathan Hale, passing the training yard after an inspection, had stopped beside the flagpole. His gaze wasn't on Ethan. It was fixed on the black mark exposed beneath Olivia's collarbone: a lantern inside a broken circle. Below it ran three pale, perfectly parallel scars.

The color left Hale's face.

"Where did you get that?" he asked.

Olivia pulled the fabric closed. "It's personal, sir."

"I asked where."

Drill Sergeant Mercer stepped forward. "Colonel, I can handle the disciplinary matter."

"Not yet." Hale looked at Olivia again. Something in his expression changed from disbelief to recognition. He straightened and raised his hand in a formal salute.

Nobody breathed. An Army colonel had just saluted a private who hadn't finished basic training.

Olivia didn't return it. Her knees felt like wet paper.

"Nine years ago," Hale said quietly, "I reviewed a survivor file from Task Force Lantern. A young woman had those same three scars. The report said she died before the rescue team reached her."

Ethan let the torn shirt slip from his hand. For the first time, he looked afraid.

"Colonel," Olivia whispered, "the report lied."

Hale's jaw tightened. "Then tell me why the unit's records were sealed and every name was marked dead."

She glanced toward the gate, where a white delivery van had slowed without stopping.

"Because someone needed the witnesses gone."

A radio hissed at Hale's belt. An aide's voice said, "Sir, there's a problem. The system just flagged Private Reyes as a deceased person."

Hale looked from his radio to Olivia.

"And somebody," the aide added, "is trying to delete the alert."
