Chapter 5 - WHAT THE CAMERA SAW

The photograph changed everything about Ethan's punishment. Mercer kept the assault report open, but turned the phone over to military investigators instead of treating the message as a prank.

Captain Iris Chen arrived after dark. She was a civilian-clothed Army investigator with a careful voice and a battered notebook. She interviewed Ethan alone, then spoke with Olivia and Hale separately. Olivia appreciated the separation. Too many people had promised help and then vanished.

"Did you receive anything that proves Jonah is alive?" Chen asked.

"A recording this morning."

Olivia played the file. Jonah's voice was thin and forced: "Liv, don't come looking. Tell Tessa I'm sorry about the window."

Tessa had told her the boy broke a kitchen window two summers earlier, chasing a baseball. But Jonah would never have called it the window. In their house it was the Great Baseball Disaster.

"That's a signal," Olivia said. "He knows he's being recorded. He wants us to remember that day."

"What happened that day?"

"He lost something important in the weeds outside the house. We spent hours hunting for it."

"What did he lose?"

Olivia pressed a hand against the tattoo beneath her jacket. "The little canvas bear Mara gave him."

Chen did not promise an instant rescue. She arranged for local detectives near Tessa's home to secure the house and review the original recordings. Hale placed Olivia in supervised quarters, not as a prisoner but as someone facing a credible threat.

At 11:18 p.m., Chen called again. "We checked the yard where Jonah lost that bear. Someone dug up a patch of soil this afternoon."

"Was anything there?"

"Fresh tire tracks. A torn fabric ear. And a note pinned under a rock."

"What did it say?"

Chen hesitated. "ASK HALE WHY HE SIGNED THE DEATHS."
