Chapter 16 - ETHAN TELLS THE TRUTH

Ethan asked to give a full sworn statement with counsel. He admitted he had torn Olivia's shirt on purpose, had repeatedly harassed her, and had passed her training schedule to his father. He also described the man who visited the family home, spoke with Walter about an old convoy, and laughed about the government forgetting what it didn't want to remember.
"Who was he?" Chen asked.
"I know him as Mr. Price. I saw him in pictures with General Sloane. I can describe him, but I don't know what his real job was."
Ethan handed over a saved voicemail from Walter. His father's voice was sharp: "If that girl finishes training, she'll have people listening to her. Break her confidence before she opens her mouth."
It didn't prove Walter knew every detail of the old operation. It proved he'd ordered interference with a witness now involved in an active inquiry. Chen's team preserved the file and followed the financial trail connected to the promised debt payment.
Ethan faced separation proceedings from training and potential additional discipline. He didn't ask Olivia to defend him. When they passed in a hallway, he looked at the floor.
"Olivia," he said, "I was cruel because I thought I could get away with it. You don't have to forgive me."
"I don't," she said. "But telling the truth now might protect someone else."
By evening investigators confirmed that the person using Gabriel Voss's dead identification had worked for Talon under another name. A judge authorized the next investigative steps after reviewing the supporting evidence.
Walter Ward was taken into custody on current allegations involving obstruction and false statements. His attorney said he would contest them.
Ethan watched the arrest on television without speaking.
Then the dispatcher who had kept the route notebook called Chen. Her voice shook.

"I know where the original order is," she said. "Walter made me store it off the company network. But I'm not the only one who knows."
A door slammed behind her, and the call ended.
