Chapter 19 - THE NAMES RETURN

The months that followed were ugly and slow. Sloane was removed from authority while the inquiry continued. Walter Ward's contracts were placed under review, and separate criminal proceedings followed the evidence of obstruction and false records. Lawyers argued. Witnesses were cross-examined. Not every allegation resulted in a charge, and not every charge was resolved on the same day.

But the false casualty list could no longer stand. Official corrections recognized that the twelve children and Olivia had survived. The service members who died protecting the evacuation were named accurately. The story of the schoolhouse no longer ended with a lie about there being no one to save.

Hale received a formal reprimand for failures in his handling of the report. He accepted it. His later testimony did not cancel his earlier neglect. Olivia respected him more for refusing to pretend otherwise.

Ethan left the training program after the disciplinary process. Before departing, he sent Olivia a letter without excuses. She read it once and filed it away. Forgiveness was hers to give or withhold, and she wasn't ready to give it.

Olivia completed her own training months later after the threat assessment and administrative reviews were resolved. Mercer shook her hand on graduation day.

"You earned this," he said. "Not because of what happened nine years ago. Because you showed up and did the work here."

Tessa and Jonah watched from the bleachers. Jonah cheered so loudly that Olivia laughed in the middle of trying not to cry.

At the small reception afterward, Nadia handed her a photograph of twelve young people standing beneath a painted lantern. On the back they had written their names and one sentence: WE GOT OUT.

Olivia counted every face twice.

Then Tessa brought out an old envelope she had kept sealed since the day Mara Quinn died.

"Mara asked me to give this to you," she said, "if you ever made it home without having to hide."
