Chapter 4 - THE BOY WHO LAUGHED

Ethan Ward was sitting outside Mercer's office when his father called.
"Did you do it?" Walter Ward asked.
Ethan stared at the loose thread hanging from his fist. "I embarrassed her. Like you said."
"Did she quit?"
"No. Colonel Hale showed up. He saluted her."
Silence. Then Walter said, "You need to stop talking about this."
"Dad, what the hell is going on?"
"Delete our messages. And don't call me again from your personal phone."
Walter owned a military shipping company and knew powerful officers. Days before the attack he'd told Ethan to drive Olivia out of training. Ethan had treated cruelty like an easy favor.
Now Ethan remembered a detail. When he'd sent his father the class roster, Walter had called back within seconds.
"Which one is Reyes?" he'd asked. His voice had been wrong.
Inside the office, Mercer presented Ethan with a formal report for harassment and assault. Ethan signed it without arguing.
"You tore a fellow trainee's clothing in formation," Mercer said. "No family connections make that disappear."
"I know, Sergeant."
"Do you?"
Ethan started to speak, but a new text lit his screen. It was from a number he didn't recognize: YOUR FATHER SAYS YOU CAN STILL MAKE THIS RIGHT.
A photograph followed. Olivia sat in Hale's office beneath the framed unit flag. The photograph had been taken through a partially open interior door minutes earlier.
Under it was a second message: THE COLONEL CAN BLEED TOO.

Ethan stood so fast his chair fell over.
"Sergeant," he said, holding out the phone, "somebody inside this building is watching her."
