Chapter 13 - THE TWELFTH NAME

Nadia brought eleven survivors' names to Chen. Some had been adopted; others still feared anyone in uniform. Each could decide whether to speak.
One name was missing from the list: Jonah Bell. In the official file, there had never been a Jonah. He was the child Mara went back for, the last face in the doorway.
"Why did she go back?" Nadia asked.
Olivia closed her eyes. "Because he wouldn't leave without his bear. She went back for both of them."
That evening Tessa found a letter Jonah had hidden under a loose floorboard months earlier. It was addressed to Olivia but never mailed. The handwriting slanted uphill, as though the boy had been running out of space.
I know you think the bear is gone, the letter said. I found him after the window broke. I did something with the little piece inside because I didn't want bad men to take it. I'm not six anymore. If anybody comes looking, remember the thing we promised under the blue lights.
Olivia read it again. Blue lights. When Jonah was little and panicked during thunderstorms, she took him to the town aquarium to watch jellyfish glowing blue. He said they looked like tiny lanterns floating in the sea.
"He couldn't mean the aquarium," Tessa said. "We haven't been there in years."
"Maybe not the building. Maybe something he saw there."
Chen asked for the old field trip records, ticket receipts, and Jonah's drawings. The whale mural in his sketch turned out to be near a closed aquarium supply warehouse. Police had checked the exterior once during an unrelated call.

Then an investigator located recent utility use at the supposedly empty building.
The next call came from a patrol officer watching the back entrance. "We have movement," she said. "And a boy just put a paper star against the window."
