Chapter 18 - TWELVE VOICES

The investigative hearing did not resemble the movies. There was no sudden confession, no crowded courtroom rising to applaud. There were questions, documents, pauses for attorneys, and witnesses struggling to describe the worst minutes of their lives.

Olivia sat with counsel and told what she had seen. Nadia testified through protective arrangements. Gabriel Voss explained the evacuation and identified the voice on the recording. Renee Foster described how shipping records had been changed. Ethan admitted his assault and the messages from Walter, knowing the admission would follow him for years.

Then Hale spoke. He confirmed he had signed a casualty report without receiving independent verification of the civilians' deaths. He described the warning he had failed to pursue. Nobody tried to make his mistake disappear because he had medals.

When Jonah's recorded interview was admitted, the room went quiet. He described hiding in the schoolhouse, Mara returning for him, and Olivia refusing to release the burning door until he'd escaped.

"She said she wasn't leaving me," Jonah recalled. "And she didn't."

Sloane's lawyers challenged the interpretation of the records. Investigators answered with the original paper order, supporting communications, and the independent route log. Allegations of criminal conduct were referred to the appropriate authorities rather than declared proved by applause.

Outside the hearing room, Olivia found the other survivors waiting with their families. Some remembered her. Some knew her only as the woman in Mara's photograph.

They stood around her without asking for a speech.

Nadia stepped forward. "We want to put her name back where it belongs."

"Mara's?"

"All of them," Nadia said. "The people who came back for us. The people whose names got erased."

Chen approached with a folded notice. "The casualty records are being reopened for correction."

Olivia expected relief. Instead she felt an old fear surface.

"What if the truth isn't enough?"

Chen looked at the twelve survivors.

"Then we'll keep recording it until nobody can claim they never heard."
