Chapter 14 - THROUGH THE GLASS

Olivia was not allowed to race to the warehouse. She stayed with a family liaison while trained officers worked from their own information. Every minute hurt.

At the building, officers confirmed a boy near the window matched Jonah's description. They approached carefully, identified themselves, and got him out during a brief confrontation in the hallway. One suspect was arrested. Another escaped through a service door but left behind a phone and a wallet containing a Talon contractor card.

Jonah had a bruised cheek and a sprained wrist. He was frightened, dehydrated, and alive.

When Olivia entered the hospital room hours later, he stared at her uniform as though it belonged to somebody else.

"You came," he whispered.

"You asked for help. Of course I came."

He tried to stand. She crossed the room and sat beside him instead. He was fifteen now, too tall to curl up in her lap like the little boy who used to sleep with one hand wrapped around a stuffed bear. He hugged her anyway.

"I didn't tell them," he said into her shoulder.

"You don't have to prove anything."

"They wanted the little piece. They kept saying you had it."

"What piece?"

"The one Mara put in my bear. I took it out years ago. I didn't want him to get hurt again."

Olivia looked toward Chen, who waited near the door. "Did you know what it was?"

"No. Just that the men in the trucks wanted it."

The boy's hands began to shake. Olivia helped him breathe until his shoulders lowered.

"You can tell us when you're ready," she said.

Jonah nodded, then pressed a folded paper star into her palm. Inside it was a hand-drawn map with a circle around a little playground beyond the old aquarium.

"I hid it somewhere they wouldn't look," he said.

May you like

"Where?"

"Under Mara's name."
