Chapter 1 - The Woman in the Doorway

“Daniel.”

His mother’s voice was barely loud enough to cross the ballroom.

One second, the band had been preparing for the first dance beneath crystal chandeliers. The next, silence swallowed the room.

Daniel Hayes turned toward the double doors.

Margaret Hayes stood there in the pale blue dress she had chosen months earlier for his wedding. Mud covered the hem and one hip. Damp gray-brown hair clung to her cheeks. One shoe was missing its heel.

“Mom?”

Claire’s fingers tightened around his arm.

For three weeks, Claire had told him the same thing.

Your mother is overwhelmed.

She needs rest.

Don’t pressure her.

Daniel had argued at first. Margaret had talked about his wedding for years. She had helped choose flowers. She had saved every venue brochure. She would never willingly miss it.

But Claire had been certain.

Now Margaret was twenty yards away, shaking.

Daniel stepped forward.

“What happened?”

Margaret opened her mouth.

A venue employee moved toward her.

“Ma’am, perhaps we can help you outside—”

A chair scraped hard across the marble.

Daniel’s father, Robert, stood.

“Don’t touch her.”

The employee froze.

Robert crossed the room, took the microphone from the bandleader, and faced the guests.

Claire leaned close to Daniel.

“Stop him.”

“Stop him from what?”

She didn’t answer.

That frightened him more than anything else.

Robert looked at Margaret, then at Claire.

“For weeks,” he said into the microphone, “my son has been told his mother was too overwhelmed to attend his wedding.”

Claire stepped forward.

“This isn’t the time.”

Robert’s eyes never left her.

“No. This is exactly the time.”

He reached inside his jacket and pulled out a folded envelope.

Daniel recognized his mother’s handwriting on the front.

“Dad, what is that?”

Robert unfolded the first page.

“Three days before your wedding, your mother received a message telling her you didn’t want her here.”

Daniel stared at him.

“I never sent that.”

“I know.”

Claire’s face went white.

May you like

Robert raised his eyes.

“Because the message came from your account while your phone was sitting in Claire’s hand.”
