Chapter 9 - Plan B

Plan B had dates.
Talking points.
Draft emails.
A list of board members most likely to believe Margaret was “confused.”
Claire had already begun.
Two trustees received messages suggesting Margaret had become forgetful.
One donor received a warning that she was “emotionally fragile.”
Daniel remembered Claire saying similar things to him.
“She repeats herself.”
“She seems tired.”
“She’s not handling pressure.”
Small comments.
Placed carefully.
Margaret looked at him.
“You started watching me differently.”
Daniel hated that she was right.
Claire did not need him to believe Margaret was incompetent.
Only uncertain.
Uncertainty did the rest.
Emma found another draft email.
From Daniel’s account.
To the foundation board.
I support Claire stepping in while Mom takes a leave of absence.
Daniel never wrote it.
But the draft was ready.
Scheduled for Monday morning.
After the wedding.
After Margaret was supposed to sign the confession.
Claire’s plan was clean.
Margaret admits fault.
Claire replaces her.
Claire controls the review.
Brightwell becomes an accounting mistake.
Money returns after Grant’s property deal closes.
Everyone moves on.
Except Margaret’s reputation.
Except the truth.
Robert looked at his wife.
“I almost believed them too.”
Margaret stared at him.
“What?”
Robert swallowed.
Claire had called him Thursday.
“She said you were having episodes.”
Margaret went very still.
“What did you say?”
“I asked if she thought you needed a doctor.”
Margaret’s eyes filled.
Daniel looked at his father.
“You didn’t call Mom?”
Robert shook his head.
“I thought Claire was with her.”
The family had not been broken by one giant lie.
They had been separated by efficient little ones.
Then Emma received an alert from the bank.
Someone had just attempted to move $380,000 out of the community development account.

Everyone looked at Grant.
His chair was empty.
