Chapter 14 - The Honeymoon Papers

Daniel canceled the honeymoon.
Not that there was a marriage left to celebrate.
Rachel filed for annulment and, in the alternative, divorce.
The legal process would take time.
Daniel hated that.
He wanted a door he could close.
Instead he got paperwork.
Claire’s lawyer issued a statement calling the situation a “family financial dispute.”
Daniel issued none.
Margaret surprised everyone by issuing one herself.
I am not ill, confused, or ashamed. My name was used without permission. I will cooperate fully with the independent audit.
Nothing about the mud.
Nothing about the wedding.
The statement spread faster than any dramatic accusation could have.
Then Claire’s narrative changed.
She claimed Daniel’s family had always treated her as an outsider.
She said Margaret hated her.
She said the cottage was “a wellness retreat Margaret agreed to.”
Then Tina Mercer, the woman who found Margaret on the road, spoke to investigators.
“She was soaked, limping, and asking for a phone.”
Wade, the driver, was located next.
He insisted Claire told him Margaret was voluntarily taking a digital detox.
Then police showed him the note:
CALL WADE SUNDAY 10 A.M. ONLY IF SHE COOPERATES.
His story changed.
Claire had paid him cash.
Told him not to return early even if Margaret asked.
Told him Robert and Daniel both agreed.
Wade surrendered text messages.
Claire:
DO NOT LET HER TALK YOU INTO BRINGING HER BACK.
Wade:
WHAT IF SHE LEAVES?
Claire:
SHE WON’T WALK FIVE MILES IN DRESS SHOES.
Daniel read it once.
Then handed the phone back.
His mother had walked anyway.
Not because she wanted revenge.
Because she wanted to tell him the truth before he built his future on a lie.
That evening he went to his parents’ house.
Margaret was in the garden.
The pale blue dress hung from a clothesline after being cleaned.
A faint brown stain remained near the hem.
Daniel touched it.
“I’ll buy you another one.”
Margaret looked at him.
“No.”
He smiled sadly.
“Of course not.”
May you like
Then she said:
“I’m keeping the stain.”
