Chapter 16 - The Board Meeting

The Hayes Family Foundation board met two weeks after the wedding.
No ballroom.
No chandeliers.
Just a rectangular table and bad coffee.
Margaret sat at one end.
Robert sat in the public seating area, not beside her.
Daniel attended as a nonvoting family representative.
Emma presented the audit.
$913,000 diverted.
$387,000 quietly restored by Stephen Bennett.
$44,000 planted in an account designed to implicate Margaret.
Additional funds frozen before transfer.
The board cleared Margaret of wrongdoing.
She did not smile.
She asked for new controls.
Two-person approval on large payments.
Independent vendor verification.
No family member allowed to approve a related-party transaction.
Annual outside audit.
Whistleblower channel.
One trustee said:
“Margaret, after what happened, no one would blame you if you stepped away.”
She looked at him.
“That is exactly why I am staying through the reform.”
Daniel almost laughed.
That was his mother.
Then she added:
“After that, I may leave because I want to. Not because somebody manufactured a story about my mind.”
The room went quiet.
Outside, reporters waited.
Margaret walked past them.
She had already said enough.
Claire and Grant faced criminal charges related to fraud, forgery, unlawful access, and coercive conduct around Margaret’s isolation.
The exact outcomes would take months.
Stephen cooperated fully and sold property to complete restitution.
He lost his company anyway.
Consequences did not arrive neatly.
Then Daniel’s attorney called with news.
Claire wanted mediation.
Not to save the marriage.
To negotiate the annulment and property issues.
In the mediation room, Claire looked at him for a long time.
“I did love you.”
Daniel believed she believed that.
It did not change anything.
He said:
“You loved the life you thought I could protect.”
Claire looked down.
Then she said something unexpected.
“I was jealous of your mother.”
Daniel frowned.
“Why?”
“Because you trusted her before you trusted me.”
Daniel stared.
May you like
The cruelest part was that Claire had succeeded in changing that.
For a while.
