Chapter 13 - Claire’s Father

Stephen Bennett asked to meet Margaret first.
Not Daniel.
Margaret agreed on one condition.
Robert stayed outside.
Daniel respected it.
Stephen sat across from Margaret in a hotel conference room.
He looked ten years older than he had at the wedding.
“I knew Grant was using foundation money,” he said.
Margaret’s eyes hardened.
“How long?”
“Five months.”
“Did you know Claire was involved?”
“Not at first.”
Stephen discovered a transfer while reviewing his company’s emergency financing.
Grant confessed.
He said the money was temporary.
Stephen demanded repayment.
His company had no cash.
So Stephen began selling personal investments and quietly returning money.
“Why didn’t you tell us?” Margaret asked.
“Because I was ashamed.”
She stared at him.
“Shame is expensive.”
“Yes.”
Then he admitted Claire discovered the repayments.
She was furious.
Every returned dollar reduced the chance the scheme could stay hidden until the property sale.
Claire told him the wedding had to happen first.
“Why?”
Stephen hesitated.
“Because after the wedding, she believed Daniel would protect her.”
Margaret went still.
Stephen continued.
“Not legally. Emotionally.”
Claire believed Daniel would help repay the money to avoid destroying his wife.
Maybe sell part of his company.
Maybe make the foundation whole quietly.
Maybe convince his parents to stay silent.
Marriage was not just love.
It was leverage.
Daniel listened later from the hallway and felt something inside him break cleanly.
There would be no going back.
Stephen handed over his records.
They confirmed $387,000 had been restored.
More money remained missing.
Then he gave Margaret one final document.
A draft prenuptial amendment Claire had asked her lawyer to prepare.
It granted her temporary management rights over certain marital assets if Daniel became “medically or emotionally incapacitated.”
Daniel had never seen it.
Rachel read the language and frowned.
“This would not have given her automatic control.”
“But she wanted him to sign it later,” Margaret said.
Stephen nodded.
“On the honeymoon.”
Daniel looked at the date on the draft.
May you like
It had been prepared before Claire ever told him his mother was overwhelmed.
The wedding itself had been part of the plan.
