Chapter 11 - The Envelope in the Cottage

Police returned to the cottage with a warrant.
The envelope was inside a kitchen drawer.
Claire had left it there for Wade.
On the front:
IF SHE REFUSES.
Inside was a draft letter to the foundation board.
Written in Margaret’s voice.
I have recently experienced memory lapses and confusion. I now believe I may have approved transactions I do not remember.
It ended with Margaret voluntarily resigning as treasurer.
Her signature line was blank.
A second page was worse.
Talking points for Robert.
How to persuade your wife to seek evaluation.
How to reduce conflict.
How to protect the family from public embarrassment.
Daniel looked at his father.
Claire had planned to manipulate him too.
Robert sat down.
“I would have believed this.”
Margaret’s face changed.
“Would you?”
He did not lie.
“Maybe.”
That answer hurt.
But it also opened something real.
Robert had been married to Margaret thirty-eight years.
And still, someone with confidence and paperwork almost convinced him not to trust his own wife.
Rachel said quietly:
“That is why fraud works. It doesn’t ask people to believe something impossible. It asks them to doubt something familiar.”
The envelope also contained a list of medical clinics specializing in memory disorders.
Claire had circled one.
The clinic’s intake coordinator was a friend of Grant’s.
No appointment had been made.
The plan had layers.
Not because Claire was a genius.
Because every layer made the next lie easier.
Daniel returned to the empty ballroom that afternoon.
Workers were already removing flowers.
The cake had been boxed.
The dance floor was bare.
Claire appeared at the far end with her lawyer.
She had changed out of the wedding dress.
Hair tied back.
For the first time, she looked like someone Daniel recognized.
That made it worse.
“I loved you,” she said.
Daniel stared at her.
“Did you?”
“Yes.”
“Then why was my mother your obstacle?”
Claire’s eyes filled.
“Because she was going to destroy everything.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
“She found what you were doing.”
Claire whispered:
“You don’t know everything.”
May you like
Then she said a name Daniel had not heard in years.
“Ask your father what happened to the first missing foundation money.”
