Chapter 2 - The Message Daniel Never Sent

The ballroom erupted in whispers.
Daniel looked at Claire.
“What does he mean?”
Claire shook her head.
“He’s confused.”
Robert held up a printed screenshot.
The message read:
Mom, I need you to stay away from the wedding. Claire says you’ve been unstable, and I can’t handle another scene. Please do this for me.
Daniel felt the blood leave his face.
“I never wrote that.”
Margaret lowered her eyes.
“I thought you did.”
Daniel crossed the dance floor.
“Mom, look at me.”
“I never wrote it.”
Her mouth trembled.
Claire spoke quickly.
“Anyone can fake a screenshot.”
Robert reached into the envelope again.
“Correct.”
He produced a second page.
“So I checked the wedding-planning tablet.”
Daniel remembered it. An iPad Claire used for vendor calls, seating charts, and shared messages. It had also been signed into Daniel’s messaging account because he hated carrying two devices during rehearsals.
Robert continued.
“The tablet shows the message was sent at 8:14 p.m. Wednesday.”
Daniel looked at Claire.
At 8:14 Wednesday, she had been sitting beside him on their couch.
His phone had been charging in the kitchen.
The tablet had been in her lap.
Claire’s voice sharpened.
“That proves nothing.”
Margaret finally spoke.
“After I got the message, Claire called me.”
“What did she say?”
Margaret’s eyes filled.
“She said you were embarrassed by me.”
A sound moved through the room.
Claire snapped:
“I never said that.”
Margaret flinched.
Not disagreement.
Robert lowered the microphone.
“Tell him the rest.”
Margaret swallowed.
“She said if I loved you, I would make the wedding easier by disappearing for a few days.”
Daniel stared at Claire.
“Where did she go?”
Margaret answered.
“A cottage outside Cold Spring.”
“Why are you covered in mud?”
“Because the driver Claire sent took my phone before he left.”
Claire’s eyes widened.
Margaret continued.
“And when I realized nobody was coming back for me, I walked.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“How far?”
“Almost five miles before a woman in a pickup truck found me.”
Claire stepped backward.
Daniel looked at the bride he had married less than two hours earlier.

Then Robert spoke into the microphone again.
“The fake message is not the worst thing she was trying to keep Margaret from telling you.”
