Chapter 12 - The Older Secret

Robert went pale when Daniel repeated Claire’s words.
Margaret stared at her husband.
“What first missing money?”
Robert sat down.
Eight years earlier, before Claire entered the family, the foundation had lost $84,000 through a bad vendor contract.
Robert had approved the vendor without proper review.
The company collapsed.
He covered the loss personally and kept it quiet to protect the foundation’s reputation.
Margaret did not know.
Daniel did not know.
“How?” Daniel asked.
Robert looked ashamed.
“Grant found the old audit note.”
Grant used it to pressure Robert months earlier.
If Robert questioned Brightwell, they would expose the old failure and claim the Hayes family had always hidden financial problems.
Robert stayed quiet longer than he should have.
Margaret’s voice was steady.
“How long did you know there was a problem?”
Robert looked at the floor.
“Two months.”
“You knew?”
“I knew there were unusual invoices. I did not know Claire was involved.”
“You didn’t tell Mom?”
“No.”
Margaret closed her eyes.
Another silence.
Another person deciding what she could handle.
Robert looked at her.
“I thought I was protecting you.”
Margaret laughed once, without humor.
“I am becoming very tired of people protecting me by lying to me.”
No one answered.
Robert apologized.
Margaret did not forgive him on command.
Daniel was learning that love did not erase consequences.
The forensic audit separated the old $84,000 loss from the new fraud.
Robert’s mistake was documented publicly.
So was his reimbursement.
No secret rescue.
No family mythology.
Then auditors found something unexpected.
The $913,000 account did not contain $913,000 in losses.
Almost $400,000 had been returned in small transfers.
Someone had been quietly putting money back.
Grant?
No.
The transfers came from Stephen Bennett.
May you like
Claire’s father.
He had known something after all.
